Spark plugs & wires - 2001 ml320

I can hold my own to complete the DIY jobs, and I have a quick question before I work on my wife's 2001 ML320.

She took it to a dealer after the check engine light came on, and they coded the problem as spark plug wires. After they told me it would be $600 to replace the wires I decided to take care of it myself. While I replace the wires I figured out I should do the plugs too.

Question is...
Why 12 plugs / wires for a 6 cyl engine? Efficiency?
Any brand better over another for Mercedes? I found wires on eBay for $115.
Anything special to change the plugs / wires on her car? I have changed them on my vehicles before...just don't know if Mercedes requires anything special in the process. Any step-by-step before starting would be great!

Thanks!

Phil

It's a twin spark design, the ML430/500's have 16. Do a search of the site and you find numerous DYI instructions with pictures. I replaced my sparks plugs myself and it took about 2.5 hours with no rush.

Get wires from Autohaus AZ. Plugs you can likely get locally. If you do a search, there is a DIY write up on doing it. It is a pretty simple job.

Where can i get a set of OEM plugs and wires for my 320 and would the supplier dispatch to the UK. My ride is starting to misfire and hesitate on acceleration CEL light comes on for a while throwing PO170 and PO173 with a bunch of other codes i have forgotten and then goes off. I have just changed the MAF (not insert) obtained from the dealer.I am not sure if the previous owner changed them but at 76k miles it cant hurt to change them. OEM parts direct does not take orders anymore as they where great with prices and delivery charges to the UK. Autohausaz has karlyn brand spark plug wire set on offer for $133.38 but I am not sure they are OEM.

I changed my plugs using the Bosch plugs listed as the OEM type for my ML350 using the postings here. I would suggest that you go to any decent motor supplier who supplies the trade. my 12 plugs cost me £55 and the socket £3.50 (I got the socket from HAlfords).

what plugs did you get and did you get ignition wires. forum members have suggested to get OEM brand plugs and spark wires thats why i did not go to cheaper stockist like German and Swedish or Euro parts etc (£90 for the set of plugs and wire from a non dealer) besides our American cousins have parts that are priced far cheaper.

I used Bosch Platinum 2+ and I am very happy. Don't change the wires just the dealer says so!!!! Personally I would be very suspicious about having the wires replaced before I check the plugs and such... in 35 years driving all kind of cars I never had a wire go bad on me...
Search on this site for the spark plug change, many great write ups with pictures. I did all 16 in less then 3 hours, all you need is a 17mm wrench for pulling the plug booths. I don't know about the ML350 but the 430 has a heath shield on the driver side right beside some of plugs and it is sharp like a sushi knife. I got some very thing garden gloves for protection.

Dealer Says...

Good advice for checkin plugs first but...
The check engine light was on and the local mercedes dealership said the code was plug wires. Can the code distinguish plugs vs. wires? Or would it just say that a certain cylinder was missing?
