hey guys need some info on this unit for those who got it installed on their ML's. I would like to know how the sound quality is with the factory bose system? Does it sound beter than the factory mcs?? can i still use my sub/amp or will only run on the four speakers without the subs?? I really like the unit but originally wanted the Panasonic strada. The avic d3 just looks more factory than the strada.. please give me some feedback on this unit. Also is it a direct fitment or do i have to purchase a separate brackets>> thanks in advance guys. pls post pics if u have
tons of info on here...if using a 2003+ ML...you will have trouble with your install... The amp is fiber optic...you will need to run the head unit directly to the speakers...(yes they are 2 ohm...but for the average person..things will be fine)
It should work wired directly to your amp. You'll need this:
Removal tools to pop the MCS - Mercedes p/n: W 000 589 88 63 00
Head unit - Pioneer AVIC-D3
Double Din Mounting Assembly and Bezel - Pioneer ADT-VA133
BlueTooth Interface (includes mic and cables) - CD-BTB200
iPod Interface Cable - Pioneer CD-I200
Car harness adapter (A/B connector & antenna adapter) - Scosche VW01AF
The ADT-VA133 makes mechanical fitment easy and look factory.
Wire it something like shown in the attached schematic with the D3 speaker outputs feeding the Bose amp directly. This configuration sounds as good or better than the MCS/Bose combo and obviously makes installation considerably easier. Just remember to setup the D3 properly:
- turn Loudness off,
- start with the EQ flat,
- feed full range to the front and back speakers
- full volume is achieved at a D3 setting of about 22 out of 40.
harmsway, you've been great, thanks for the info. Most likely leaning towards the d3 instead of strada..Which of things u mentioned thta the avic d3 comes with?? does it come with the Pioneer ADT-VA133?

I bought all items on that list separately. Some resellers may bundle things in a package. I paid about C$80 for the ADT-VA133. It is a metal collar, screws & a plastic bezel for the front. Sounds expensive but it makes installation easier.
I just ordered all my stuff tonight..Got a new D3 with the BTB200 (Bluetooth unit) for $760US Shipped.. Just ordered the ADT-VA133 as well (thanks for that info...some say i didnt need it, but if it makes it look nice..then worth it).
I need to get that wiring harness for the power and antenna (I have an '05...I assume the harness will JUST be for power and antenna...) I then decided on getting a small 5 channel amp and use the RCA's from the AVIC and tap into the factory speaker wires at my OPTICAL amp (sucks btw!! eerr).. Any idea if the stock bose sub will be ok with a small amp? I could do a basslink, bazooka...ect...but I would like to leave all stock speakers in..
The amp I bought is 2 ohm stable....
ALl the speakers and bose sub tie into the factory amp...right? All you <2002 guys have a working bose sub with your avic...right?
Harmsway...your posts have been very helpful.
The 2 OHM thing scared me on the avic...people say its fine...but if we want to rock our new XM/DVD, the amp will allow that!
The ADT-VA133 kit is the best money spent. You won't be dissapointed. On my 2000 the AVIC goes direct to the Bose Amp via the stock wiring. Yours being optical poses a bit more difficulty. Looks like you're taking the best path deleting the bose amp and substituting your own thus eliminating the proprietary optical connections. That should be pretty straight forward. The bose woofer will probably work fine with your new amp although it may sound like ass. After all it's really(barely) a woofer and not a sub. I like your idea of using a Bazooka instead. I'm considering the very same sub solution. Good luck with your install!
