It did provide the sequence of events to remove the pump. However it does not inform you of certain basic items, such as how to remove the belt or that the idler tension pully must be removed to access one of the pumps torx bolts. It does not tell you that the idler tension pulley has a tamper proof torx head fitting to remove the belt. Leave it to MB to not want to allow you to change your own belt. Discouraged after a trip to find a tamper proof T50 torx bit, I went ahead and removed the resevoir.
I did replace my PS pump myself yesterday. You do NOT have to remove any of the pulleys to undo any of the torx.
Here is how it is done after the reservoir is removed (1x8mm bolt):
1. Locate the port on the right side of the pump, undo the 17mm nut and release the copper hose first.
2. PS pump itself is held by 4 x 10mm torx bots, two on the front and two on the back. Two on the back can be undone easily with a ratchet (socket wrench) and 10mm socket, ideally torx but normal will work just fine.
3. One front bolt is located under the belt (lift it slightly to gain access) and the last one behind the next pulley to the left of pump (painted red in the picture attached). Use 17mm spanner with the pulley's centre nut to move this pulley as far to the left as you could to get access to the last bolt (you will also need to do so when you're fitting the new pump and when you put the tension belt back).
4. Re-attach and re-fasten all hoses back to pump and reservoir, fill up with power steering fluid and push the air out of the system as 43sqd advised.
I also replaced the o-ring using directions from this site (thanks guys!) but that was six months ago and I did not do the air-bleed. Within the past month I am having more problems. There is no leak but the car really whines when turning. This is after the car has been warmed up and driven a little. It does it for turning left and right but more when I am turning left. It does not seem to be hard to steer, just makes noise. I am about to go and jack up the front and see if there is any play in the turning and maybe try the air-bleed procedure. My question: Is it possible that I have air in the system and am just starting to hear whining 5 months later? Any other ideas?
Did anyone find that replacing the o-ring between the reservour and the sterring pump resolve a "leaking" situation. Mine seems to be leaking now and I wonder if it is just that o-ring or if there is something in the power steering pump that leaks.
I noticed a post from Stromy which said "total cost to repair $2.50" which just covers the o-ring, not sure if he replaced the PS unit itself.

It is always the gasket/O-ring, part #000 466 18 80 and the c clip part #000 994 19 03.
Just wanted to say thanks for the info you gave on replacing the O-ring. Mine recently went bad I originally thought it was my pump that was bad.
My local dealer (VA Beach) told me that I needed a new pump, that front shaft seal (fancy way of defining the O-ring I guess and/or confusing someone to think maybe it was the tie rod) was bad. They also wanted $1200 to fix it; after charging $50 to diagnose the problem. I told them what the problem was when I took it in; I just wanted to see if it was part of the recall. They still charged me $50 despite me insisting that Stevie Wonder could have spotted the leak. At then end of the day I spent $3.50 on the seal (at the dealer) and $7.99 on some fluid. Also, your directions on how to remove the reservoir were “spot on” I fixed the thing in less than 30 minutes.
Hello from Spain. I have a ML430 99' and my steering makes noise when I turn in both sides. It happens always, when the engine is cold and warm. My MB dealer said that the pump need a change. They asked 1200 euros (1500$). I prefer to get dirty and do it by my own. Thanks for your explanations. They are very helpful. But before start the change, do somebody know if my pump really needs a change? The only problem I have is the noise, for the rest, it works right. As a clue, 2 years ago I lost all the steering oil and I drove to the dealer (the steering system worked very hard). Could the pump be affected for this? I would like to repair it in case one day the steering system breaks totally. I have checked that the noise comes from the pump putting my fingers in it. Thanks for your help

The fix for this problem is to replace the P/S reservoir #000 460 01 83, seal/O-ring #000 466 18 80, lock clip #003 994 54 45 and two quarts of M/B P/S fluid.
After replacing the above items and filling with fluid, it is extremely important NOT TO START THE ENGINE until after the front wheels are raised from the ground and the bleeding procedure has followed.
So wherever you perform the repair, that is the location that you must raise the wheels.
Here are the instructions for the replacement and bleeding procedure. Hopefully the 2 yrs. of driving with air in your system did not ruin the pump, but this would be the cheapest way to find out.
Great!!! Thank 43aqd!!!! It works. My steering systems already doesn't make noise. Thank you very much for your help. It saves me 1150 euros in my MB dealer!!!!
