OK, so I was driving my 2004 ML500 home tonight from not too far away, and it was fine. I got to a stop light and i noticed the car would have trouble ideling, the lights in the dash would become dimmer like it couldn't stay started, and the car would then stall. I restarted the truck and in park it gave me this slipping/clanking sound from under the car somewhere. Then when I dropped it down to Drive/Reverse, it would do the same thing as it once I got to the stop light! The car had no trouble staying started when it was going. I got home just now and let my father take a look, so he drove it around the block. He got back and it had stopped having any trouble ideling and didn't stall, and in park, reverse, neutral, and drive, I got no clank from under the car! We seem to think that it is the torque converter that is starting to go, and then it warmed up and started working correctly. Its about 35 degrees here in New Jersey. It never went into Limp Mode and the kick down and all gears worked. I have a warranty on the car so I'm giving it to the dealer tomorrow. Anyone have a suggestion/hypothesis?

Sounds just like my C230 did when the transmission went out. Before you destroy your transmission and have to pay for a core like I did. You should have it checked out by the shop. The transmission in my C 230 and ML 320 are the same one. The core cost me $1000.00 extra... I'm not sure what one is in yours but mine is the 722.00.
