Transmission Experience Code P0715

I thought I would share my experience with everyone...

2000 ML430 (78,700 miles or 126,669 kms)

Occasional “Mechanical Limp Mode” noticed at 78,603 miles (126,500 kms). Truck would go into 3rd Gear only, but reset after 1 minute shut down, no CEL light. Then vehicle would resume normal functions.

Code is P0715, No CEL Light at this point.

Vehicle went into “Severe Limp Mode” 2nd Gear only, Nov 15, 2007 at 78,708 miles (126,669 kms) 9:15 pm. CEL light came on for the first time. Vehicle was driven directly to David Morris MB Dealership for Service.

I told Dealer that I would like a Transmission Fluid Service and further advisement to correct the problem.

Vehicle has some Oil Leak at 13 pin connector on Transmission.

After doing extensive research on this forum and others, I was convinced that I needed the Transmission Electrical Plate and Oil and Filter change.

What the Dealer did:
Test with Star Tester: 1.2 hrs $150.00
Replace Plate and
Perform oil and
Filter change: 4.5 hrs $562.50

Parts: 140 270 08 61 $260.60
Electric Kit
140 277 00 95 $18.79
Transmission Filter
140 271 00 80 $15.74
Gasket
203 540 02 53 $11.85
Spacer
140 991 00 55 $1.01
Pin
007603 010100 2 of @ $0.96
Transmission Seal Ring

001 89 21 03 10 7 of @ $19.85
Trans Fluid for 722.6

Labor: $712.50
Parts: $448.86
Shop Supp: $30.00
Tax: $71.48

Total: $1,262.84

Keep in mind, this is in CAN $

My comments:
They had my ML for 10 Days! No Loaner (My SA says she "tried her best") but they had a 2-3 week waiting list to get one. My Indy doesn’t do tranny work, unfortunately.
Looks like there are 2 modes of “Limp” and you only have a short amount of time or miles before it is “severe”.

Any thoughts or comments?

the trans electrical (13 pin) connector is located on the passenger side just forward of the trans oil pan

Search "trans electrical connector"

I have posted this problem with the electrical plate and the connector leak many times on Benzworld but not on this particular forum, so anyone reading this thread please change your transmission fluid at 60K Km or the equivelant in miles. It will save you a lot of money and time out for the car.

Preventative maintenance is better than an expensive cure.

That is because you must clear the codes from the Eng. Computer, Trans. Comp. and the Traction Control Comp. You will have to find a mechanic that has a professional grade scanner that can access and clear all three computers/modules.

Interesting and very informative. Your vehicle doesn't really have that much mileage and this happened. It also sounds like you didn't buy used and you've maintained the vehicle as required.

For me, the lesson in all this is just what Eric said earlier - do the tranny fluid change somewhere between 60 and 100k. On my E, I did it at 60K and I gained mileage and shift efficiency. The ML is driven a lot less and 98% highway, so I'm targeting 80K. The 80K is based in discussions with my SA and my MB master-tech. Same who advised to do the E at 60K. Hopefully I'm not going to regret it.
