How to replace brake-light switch?

Ok, so my wifes car has her brake-lights on constantly, whether she is applying the brakes or not they stay on...so i figured it was the brake-light switch under the dash..anyone have a DIY to replace the switch?

It's here, somewhere. There is a really nice post with pics and details. It took me 10 minutes to change mine... It was 11pm, my first time seeing anything under the dash and I had a cheesy flashlight. It's a very easy procedure. I don't remember how I found it, but it only took a search.

Here is a link to the original thread. It has a detailed description of the problem and the solution. Also note that there is an updated part number for the switch from MB.

Hope that helps..

its under the dash. make sure you press the brake with your hand while you put in the new switch. it takes like 15 min. i had to change it on my 98 ml320 because my car would go into limp mode and it wouldnt shift out of 1st gear.

2001 ML-320 -Thanks for posting this. My brake lights worked, did not having weird dashboard lights yet my problem was that my car would not come out of park without the assistance of a pen inserted into the flap below the D position on the gear indicator. My part from the dealer, who was open on a Saturday, was $32.40 incl tax and took <10 minutes to install. This blog is a godsend!!!!!!

Concur with brophymp on our 01 ML320. Brake lights constantly stayed on but had no other problems, such as being locked in park or other dash warning lights. Part number 01-545-64-09. Got ripped out of $32.48 from dealership + plus short time to install.

Interesting to note that the plunger on the new switch extends further out than the old one. Additionally, when depressed, the new plunger does not retract into the switch as far as the old one. The term "old one" is used to represent the switch that was replaced by the dealership (under warranty) in Jan 2009. MB quality strikes again!

Reply to how to replace brake light switch (pedal) 1999 ML320

I just wanted to say THANK YOU for this post and all of the valueable information.

I am a "novice" working on Mercedes and I followed your steps and had the part installed, and those annoying BAS/ESP lights "silenced" (i.e. not coming on as they have been for months), within 10 minutes.

You all are the best!
