This has always been a problem. So many systems are intertwined, but the cheapest fix du jour would be the brake light switch. Sometimes it works and others not. It's pretty cheap at about $15.

Thanks for that 43sqd - I thought the brake light switch was only a remedy in relation to the BAS/ESP light problem.
The problem with my mother's '98 ML320 is to do with the ABS light only.

FAR888, often the ABS light comes on due to a low voltage. If you want to know why it came on, have the Mercedes dealer hook up the diagnostic computer.
