MB purists will tell you that you must use MB brand but I've had Valvoline SuperSyn in my ML430 for about 6 months and in the ML320 for about 1 month. So far, no issues and they're both actually quieter. The MB brand is NOT synthetic.

I would recommended MB fluid and it's not expensive. One bottle will last you a long time.

That is Mercedes part number Q1460001 for a list price of $8.50.

MBUSA recommends both:

MB Power Steering Fluid for W163 M-Class
MB Part No. BQ 1 46 0001
or an approved Dexron III ATF (see above)

The stuff I use is Valvoline 'Synpower' fluid. It is nearly crystal clear and doesn't smell as bad as the MB stuff.
