What is the life span of an OEM battery?
I have a 2002 ML320 purchased in December 30th of 2001, current it has 77,050 miles. I have all standard equipment, no exceptional power hungry electronics. When do I have to repalce the battery? I don't want to be stranded with a dead battery.

I've just replaced my battery after six years and one months service from the original one.....even then it was still ok but beginning to be just a little sluggish on cold morning starts, that was the sign for me to change it.

In my experience your battery is on borrowed time
Our 2002 ML320 has got 81,000 miles and we're on our 3rd battery.
In my experience Mercedes batteries typically last 3- 4 years.
You're doing well.

If you are considering an aftermarket battery, here are my experiences.
If you get a Sears Diehard battery, the battery is shorter than the OEM battery. I put a slotted chock of wood on top of the battery to give it enough height so that the stock battery strap would hold the battery down. I have also noticed greater than normal corrosion on the negative battery terminal of this battery to the point where it required a battery post shim.
Interstate batteries offering fits better and I haven't seen the same corrosion issues as with the Diehard.

Mine lasted nearly 8 years. I changed it because the wife left a rear light on and drained it completely down. I was afraid that trying to save it would eventually cause a crap out because complete drain downs weaken a battery considerably, especially an old one.

how much is a battery from the dealer? Not for them to install just to buy and DIY.
