A newbie here and a newly bought used 2002 ML500 with approximately 76,000 miles on it. Just got it a 5 days ago, BAS Esp and ESP warning lights up same time while cruising home. Independent dealer giving me 30 days warranty and willing to resolve the issue. Should I be so concern with this that could lead to other future problems and is this something major that I need to watch out for.
Just have him fix it and you'll be good to go. We had this problem for almost a year now. Ours is most likely the sensor going bad. It doesn't affect driving at at all...
Of course, if it is the BAS ESP system itself, it could affect the driving.
I've read other threads with regards to this problem and some do say it has happened to them not once. Is this issue like a maintenance procedure if the problem exists with the brake switch nor the sensors as others have encountered. Does this happen to all ML's or it is just your luck that it fails you.
Thanks for reading this, I just want to bring out my awareness on certain issues with the ML that will and could happen in the future not only with this but same with other problems that I might expect.
They are definitely a great vehicle with driving comfort and power.

When the BAS/ESP lights come on again, visually check to see that your stop lights are working. If they aren't then you need a new stop light switch. Also try turning the steering wheel all the way to the right and then all the way to the left. This procedure will reset the system. Other than that it could be a multitude of things, too many to go through.
The brake wear warning light and the BAS/ESP warning light were coming on intermittently in my 2000 ML. I knew that the brakes were done and that the stop-lamp switch was the most common cause for the BAS/ESP, so I bought a new switch. Oddly enough htough, after replacing all the brake components both warning lights have stopped lighting up even though I haven't replaced the stop-lamp switch yet.

Most likely it is the brake switch, it happen to me twice.
