I have a 1998 ML 320. The AC fan started to make a funny noise and the dash sort of vibrates. sounds like there is something caught in the fan (hope it wasn't alive!). I cleaned the filter but still makes the sound and vibration. would like to know how to get into the fan blades/motor housing to see if there is something caught in the blades. It still blows, but not as good. Any help is appreciated.
Remove the black cover again under the right side of the dash, remove the electrical connector to the blower motor and then remove the bolts holding the blower motor. After you drop it down you will probably find that something is lodged in the squirrel cage causing it to be unbalanced.
Before you put the blower motor back in, reconnect the elec. plug, grab a hold of the lower part of the motor, turn the controls on to operate it so you can assure yourself that the problem is gone. Also vacuum the blower cavity out to make sure you get all the debris removed.
Thanks so much. Will try that today. I have found I can do a lot of these types of repairs on this car, to my surprise. I appreciate your help. I have had a couple of weird problems, one which the dealer said had never happened on one of these vehicles in the US (driver side airbag ignitor went off without deploying the airbag - thought I had been shot!) and now the gas tank seems to have come loose from its brackets and the nozzle intake has dropped about 1" and the "check engine" light came on, don't think this will be a cheap or easy fix at the dealer. Thanks again.
The check eng. light came on because when the tank dropped, it kinked or disconnected a hose attached to the filler neck. These hoses are hooked up to the Evap. System, which will throw a code.
The fuel tank is supported by two straps, which are not expensive at the dealer (about $20 each). Needless to say your problem is very dangerous and should be repaired ASAP before further driving.
