broken fuel level....

An under-designed/defective fuel gauge is the least of our problems, but it points to a fundamental problem that affects the most basic devices that are necessary to safely drive a vehicle. Getting stranded because the fuel gauge has random and incorrect readings is not acceptable.

Anybody familiar with the ML model for the last 7-8 years know the large list of quality/defect problems that it has and that has been published extensively in the automotive industry. Many of us that belong to various forums since the first ML models arrived are very familiar with these issues.

http://www.benzworld.org/forums/w163...ghlight=report

We all had other great quality brand vehicles before, and unless one is blinded by stickers/batches/brands, it is obvious when a vehicle has serious issues and when the rate of failure is well above average. New people are not aware of the number of people that have come and go and who had all kind of problems with their ML.

Just to point a few significant problems that plague old and newer ML models that easily comes to mind:

Fuel pumps overheating/failing
Fuel pump lines (under-designed)
Fuel Senders
Failing Coil Inductors
Transmission design/quality problems
Transmission Controllers
Brake Switches
Steering Sensors
Wheel Sensors
Window Switches
Power Steering Pumps Failures
Power Steering Racks (Failure and whining)
Crank Shaft Position Sensors
Engine Failure due to Sludge Issues
MAF Sensors
AAM problems
Key Failures
Trip Computers (False alarms, etc)
Harmonic Balancer
Exploding Batteries
Engine Hesitation (various causes & hard to pinpoint)
Catalytic converters
O2 Sensors
Power Steering hose/clamps
Plastic Lock Actuators (Rear Hatch, Etc)
Motor Mounts Collapsing
High Oil Consumption
Etc, etc...

This is without mentioning dealer string repair scams, bad MB customer service, and dealers replacing vehicle parts for old used ones.

That is why, too, our vehicles values are so low that even many of us who bought brand new vehicles are forced to get stop gap insurance in our loans because their real market value falls well below their normal loan values (insurance only pays market value not loan values). Even MB dealers mention that the ML's are worth cr@p after 100,000 miles and that is why they would only give $9000.00 for a 2001 ML in excellent condition and that was even 1 year and a half ago..

MUST WE KEEP IN MIND THAT THE LIST OF PROBLEMS YOU JUST PROVIDED HAUNTS 90% OF CAR OWNERS!!! JUST BECAUSE IT HAS MB ON THE HOOD DOESNT MEAN IT WILL RUN FOREVER WITHOUT A PROBLEM.

It is like a computer on wheels in my opinion. I'm a software engineer and in my opinion it wasn't the best idea on MB side to interlace as many different interfaces as they did. For the year 2000, the MCS unit is ahead of its time, not bad IMHO. They should have spent more time in the analysis and testing phase for the ML. They had the right idea just rushed it out the door!

My take of all these is that MB fail to correct the issue at first repair or even second repair. The repeated repair of the same issue/problem within short period of time is a big joke to me. I don't expect to have a car that never had any mechanical break down but the same problem kept coming back for 2,3 even 4 times...that calls for Lemon Law. We all love our cars/trucks and that's why we bought them at the first place but if MB can not resoulve a issue/problem multiple times, we as consumers should not take it lying down.

All vehicles develop problems sooner or later. That's why there are statistical records, over the life of all vehicle models & makes, designed to monitor and illustrate, in an educated and statistically oriented manner, where they stand in component & build quality against the available competition.

Using the available accumulated industry data, analyzing/comparing the existing model TSB's (gravity of the problems), analyzing the various vehicle/model repair & failure benchmarks performed by various neutral and non-neutral entities, analyzing your own and other people experiences, tracking various forums for years, and tracking for 40+ years the history & quality of various vehicles, models, and brands, it provides you with more than enough information to make an educated guess on how to rank and compare various vehicles/models/brands.

I love my MB ML's, and even more my 2005 ML 500, but it is light years behind the quality MB used to offer in their past generations of vehicles. We all have admired Mercedes for 50+ years, so when they begin to go south, as they had in the late 90's, we the real owners need to have the balls to say it the way it is so that corrections can be made.

Just closing our eyes, adoring a shiny emblem, and trying to ignore serious problems/issues, does not help Mercedes or us, and will just ensure that Mercedes becomes a brand owned by shiny emblem lovers instead of owned by people that love and appreciate high quality, technology, engineering, and customer service.

In addition, Lexus, Acura, and other vehicle brands, have become what Mercedes used to be in the past. It is up to Mercedes Benz to choose if they want to keep with the quality brands or with the bottom of the pack..

If you see the quality report table in the link below, you will see the ML at the complete bottom of the list. That is the last position out of 30 high end and completely generic models/brands. There are various quality industry reports that practically show the same trend.

I talked to some people, in the past, who told me that if I say anything negative on the MB/ML's, then the value of our ML's are going to go way down. First of all, it is what it is no matter what color you want to paint it. Secondly, the values of the ML's are already way down, and I am too busy with life/work/family to be spending my time stranded or fixing my ML all the time. Last year (2006), my 2005 ML 500 spent 5 weeks in the shop for engine, power steering, and other repairs, which is almost 5 weeks more than what many of my friend's Lexus vehicles have spent since they bought them in the late 1990's.
