ML320 - Fatal Accident: Five killed in collision

A drunken driver who was driving a 2004 GMC Sierra caused one of the worst traffic crashes in Las Vegas' history, police said, when he slammed into a the side of a sport utility vehicle - 1998 Mercedes-Benz ML 320 - carrying a family, killing five of the eight people of including an infant, a toddler and two young boys Saturday night.

The 32-year-old woman who was driving and two boys between 8 and 11 years of age were pronounced dead at the scene of the crash. A girl who was about a year to 18 months old died on the way to University Medical Center, and a boy younger than 1 died Sunday morning from his injuries, police said.

The three survivors from the SUV -- 20-year-old Karla Dominguez, a woman who is about 35 and a girl who is about 8 -- were in very serious condition Sunday night, police said. They were uncertain who was sitting where in the Mercedes but said there would have been enough seat belts for all of them. Police said at least one of the youngest children was in a child-safety seat.

About 9:30 p.m., Jayne was eastbound on Farm Road in a 2004 GMC Sierra and went through the four-way stop at a high rate of speed, police said.

At the same time, the SUV, which was northbound on Tenaya, drove into the intersection. Jayne slammed into the left side of the Mercedes. The Mercedes' gasoline tank ruptured, and it burst into flames, police said.

Police said they think the victims died from the impact of the collision and not from the fire.

very sad.

From what I hear on this forum even the ML320 is renound for its safety?

Although most side impact accidents of this scale never end well in most cases.

5000 pound truck the sierra is.

fing pick up trucks! Why do they always start accidents? You know what I noticed, criminal types always prefer pick up trucks and those red neck suvs. You guys dont even argue with me, I learned this from everyday experience at work. Theres something about pick up truck drivers that pisses me off. Let me see:

1. Lack of road courtesy
2. Why do they buy a pick up truck with turn signals when they dont even use them?
3. Self-absorbed people are usually driving them
4. They dont know when to slow down or speed up.
5. it goes on and on

Yes, and the Judge set the bail at $2 million.
The killer is facing 20 counts including eight felony charges...
He did NOT get hurted in the car crash accident!!!

Very sad...and most of the victims are very very young... the youngest one is only two years old.

Glad he's getting stiff punishment. Something like doesn't deserve to get off easy.

R.I.P. to the family and those involved in the accident. I don't believe '98 MLs had side-curtain airbags (correct me if I'm wrong) but I don't think those would have helped in this case either. 5,000+ pick up truck at high speeds will mean bad things no matter what.

so you say your coworkers are all no-turn-signal-using, redneck-pickup-driving criminal types, are they? Where do you work, again?

On a serious note, I'm surprised that the ML has enough seatbelts for 8 people. Is this true of the 7 passenger ML?

I strongly agree with you, especially scenario 1. and 2.

98 ML does not have side curtains and standard version has 5 belts with rear center having only horizontal belt. Maybe they had added 3-rd row seats, but that is rare.
Than in Las Vegas not too many people carry about buckling up. I can easily image bunch of kids jumping to the windows and sunroof.
Sad story.
