B Service Pops up after only 3000 miles of A Service ....Confused ???
I need help on the following....Any input is appreciated.
Bought a used 2005 ML350 in Feb 2006 from the dealer. At that time there are 13000 miles on the vehicle and the records show that the A service is done at 12600 miles. I was in the impression that B service is required only at 26000 miles but as soon I hit 16000 miles, double wrence symbol started popping up in the odometer of the dash board.
I am totally confused. I have the following questions.
1) Is there any problem with my vehicle ? I am sure that the dealer would love to rip me off.
2) Is the actual requirement of the B service is at 16000 miles and/or after One year of the A service. As by the time I hit 16000 miles it was Feb 2007.
I am totally confused....Please help.
If I have to go for a B service...how much would it cost me ???
Am assuming your car is still under the factory 4year/50K warranty (regardless of whether you bought it new or pre-owned). With that said, you should be able to have the services done at any MB dealership at no cost to you. Last year I had my B-service done while the car was under the original warranty and I paid $0 out-of-pocket.
Now, one possible reason why your double wrench is showing up maybe due to driving conditions in your area (at least this is what MB is saying per the owners manual).
Schedule an appointment with the dealer and they should cover most if not all of the B-service. I don't think they will cover air/fuel-filter though if it needs to be replaced....my $0.02
Have a read of the service booklet that came with your manual. You may find that the service interval is every 10,000 miles (not sure because in Australia our interval is 15,000 km). Generally the services alternate between A and B, so after the A service at 12,000 the next one would be B at 22,000.
There is an ASSYST program that figures out how soon you need to go for service. If you burn-off the next guy every time the light goes green, you get called in sooner than the little old lady who drives her ML to church on Sundays.
In some countries, the program also calls you in after a time interval, like 12 months.
Not sure how it works in the USA but here we pay for all our scheduled services. We don't pay if there's a fault that needs to be fixed under warranty.
Starting 2005, all scheduled maintenance services are NOT free in US and the schedule maintenance services for A and B are for every 13000 miles. Only faults are covered under Manufacturer's warranty. So not sure, what to do now.
Is the double wrench giving you a number next to it, telling you how many miles to go? If it is, you should take your ML in for service before it hits zero. That number gets recorded in your maintenance log at the time of service; if you don't take care of your ML according to MB's recommendations, that doesn't look good on your FMBSH.

Lorryfan, unfortunately he'll have to pay out of pocket since MB dropped the free service beginning MY05. With the 05, B Service is 26K or FSS - but FSS should come later than 26K unless something afoul is happening, and I believe there's something wrong here.

First off, read my reply to Lorryfan's reply. Did the dealer record show that A service was actually done at 12,600 miles. Your statement above doesn't seem to really say that!!!

That's not quite right, but I understand what you mean. For the MY05 trucks, A service comes at 13K (or FSS), B at 26K or FSS, then A at 39K, etc, etc . But, if all is right, FSS should come after the mileage limit - not a rule, but generally that should be the case. You sound like a cool guy who has been driving the vehicle normlly so I don't think it's your driving style. It could be that that A service was never done. If the A was done, then take the truck in immediately. But don't ask them to do B service. Explain to them exactly what you just posted and let them diagnose what the "problem" could be - that's warranty work. If they come back and say you need B service, ask them to explain why - the double wrench shouldn't be there if A was done as advertised and nothing is wrong with the truck, unless it was sitting for nearly 12 months after A service was done, and I doubt that is the case. I don't recall exactly, but the warnings come up at around 2K miles to service. That'd be my approach. Worst case, you'll fuck-up $400 for B service. Good luck and post results please.
3000 Miles is not normal for an average city/highway used ML. Your dealer should understand that. I am sure you are not in low range and racing through the sahara sands/dunes. Have you checked the condition or your oil..? At 3000 miles your synthetic oil, and filter, should still look good compared to oil at 16,000 miles.
Some possible other remote possibilities are:
They did not reset the FSS and only topped the oil instead of performing the A service oil change therefore making the FSS sensor extend the miles before the service warning. If you just top the oil, your FSS sensor will think the oil is in better condition and will extend the warning for later. Maybe 16,000 is the hard limit for maximum FSS miles.
Bad oil sensor..?
Somebody added dino oil instead of synthetic oil and therefore the shorter dino oil life was detected by the sensor?

Rambo...a newbie to ML's
There is a possibility that the FSS was not reset when A service was done or it was recorded but not done. The computer continued counting and now it thinks you are way past the miles for A service. So, it is showing the need for B service.
I suggest you perform B service and reset the FSS. And later if the FSS indicates service outside the prescribed mileage/usage you'll know if your indicator is faulty.

Does a 2001 have the FSS Sensor? I recently changed the oil in my 2001 ML with synthetic and filter the symbol was a single wrench with 6800 miles to go and the miles to service didnt change a bit when I changed the oil.
