Refer to page 1 of this post. I posted pictures so there would be no confusion. It is no where close to the same as a transmission in looks. The transfer case has 2 drive shafts in it. One going to the front (short) and one going to the rear differential (long).
Ok, thanks!! I guess I'm a little confused what a transfer case exactly is? I know you have the transmission and differential but haven't really heard of a transfer case?
The fluid in both differentials has been changed... that I do know...
Changed it last night.
found a great little pump at the NAPA store and was real easy.
did not come out too black, will do it again in 3000mi and see what it looks like then as well.
'Preciate all the info!!
Hello to everyone. I am new to MLs, being a long time GWagen owner and enthusiast. As such, I am very used to extensive preventative maintenance, such as changing the fluids in gearbox, transfercase and differentials, which have always been scheduled in the official maintenance for the GWagen.
My question is: are the fluid change of gearbox, transfercase and differentials listed in the scheduled maintenance for the ML. It appears to me that they aren't. Why is this so? I just bought a 1999 ML320 with 99,000 miles on the odometer and full main dealer service history for my wife, and I am worried that these things were never done to the truck.
The ML had its gearbox replaced by a brand-new unit 12,000 miles ago for the princely sum of € 5,000 ($ 8,000) so it is clear to me that preventative maintenance always pays...
Is there anything else, apart from the above, that I whould be concerned with in terms of maintenance?

Sorry, I haven't found that information either. I personally dont see any harm in changing them all now.
Finally changed the transfer case fluid as well as both front and rear diff's (as a preventative measure, I had no nasty noises but that's something I regularly do to my G-Wagens).
Apart from the tips already given I have the following:
1) Aid your effort with a generous bar when undoing the fill/drain plugs. It's amazing how little effort is required to undo them if you can produce the necessary torque.
2) To fill the diffs or the transfer case with fluid, I have used a fluid pump made by SAMOA. It is so good that it can even be used as a syringe, absorbing the fluid directly from the container and injecting it into the diffs or transfer case. www.samoaindustrial.com
3) If you want to prevent leaks from your diffs after the fluid change, you will have to replace the rubber gaskets of the fill and drain plugs of each diff. You'll need four A 025 997 42 48 fro your friendly MB dealer.
4) I always take my Gs for a spin before changing oils and fluids and let them drain generously while I have a cup of tea... this ensures that most of the old fluid has been drained so that you optimize the fluid change.
5) Finally, think about the environment and dispose of the old fluids properly.....
The most important step to keep in mind when replacing the transfer case fluid is to NOT overtighten the screws. If they are overtightened, the transfer case cover will crack and you may need a new transfer case. Don't ask me how I know...... (thankfull I had Starmark Warranty at the time)
