'98 ML320 Fuel Pump Replacement Cost

Need help with this quickly, please. My 1998 ML320 wouldn't start up after refueling; the battery was fine. Noticed some gas leakage around the gas tank Towed to the dealer and they now say I need a new (updated) fuel pump, fuel filter and fuel lines. By the way, at the dealer they managed to start it up right after it was towed in. Also, Check Engine Light is on. The quoted price is ~ $1,700. Is this reasonable, anything else you can suggest I bring up with the dealer (like any other less costly solutions)? Thanks much for any help!

I paid 1,028 in Boston last year for this procedure at the dealer.
But that didn't include fixing what you describe as a 'gas leak'. sounds dangerous.
If check engine light is on - did they say what was the cause - were codes read?

Thanks for the reply. I asked about the codes, they wouldn't tell me -- just saying that the CEL is related to the fuel pump being bad, but I had the CEL on for 2 days and read the code myself. At that time, it was P0442, EVAP Emission Control System Leak (Small). I was about to take it to a mechanic to check it out when this bigger problem happened. Could you please provide the breakdown of your cost (parts/labor/hours)? This should probably give me some additional info I could use with the dealer.

A fuel pump cost about $300, so I'm not sure where the other $1400 is going

I bought OEM pump on ebay for $160.
Leak might originate in several places, but I would suspect the pump gasket, what triggered leak error.
Depends of the mileage the fuel filter replacement/upgrade might not be necessary, but stealer will push for the job, because with the access already open it is just easy money.
Go to independent.

I paid $200 on ebay and got the updated lines from ttp://www.autohausaz.com The job took about 2 1/2 hours. It is not that hard to do, I can talk you thru the entire process.
