I have a 2001 ML 430. I recently noticed my steering being off-center, and after looking under my truck at the front tires I see that they have prematurely wore on the INSIDES. The outsides of the front tires have perfect tread left, but the insides are almost bald.
Well, I had a 4-wheel alignment done, but my steering is still off-center. Im concerned because when I replace these expensive tires, I dont wanna wear out the 2 new fronts again.
Does anyone think the wheel allignment should have fixed the problem?
Once I replace the 2 bald tires should my steering no longer be crooked?
Thanks!

Alignment should have fixed it. I suspect the toe-in measurement was off to start
with, being toed out would wear the front tires on the inside. Take it to a
reputable alignment shop. Have them lock the steeering wheel straight and then
shorten one tierod and lenghten the other while maintaining overall correct toe
spec. That will correct the problem!!
134 MPH is 195 feet per second. Not a smart thing to do in the rain!!!

I think it's required(or suggested) that if we replace any tire, we should replace all 4 because of the ESP system. That's what I was told last week.
NOPE... My truck has not been lowered. I already had the 4-wheels alligned about a week ago, but I am concerned that I am gonna ruin a set of new tires once I put them on. If I buy a set of new tires, and ride a few months and notice they are worn on the insides again, Im gonna be pissed at wasting all that money of the tires.
I commute to work in my truck, and drive about 95 miles everyday round trip. Until I buy another car in a few weeks, this is my daily driver. By the way, this Benz is super quick and a blast on the freeway! I have only had it 3 months and have put about 8000 miles on it already!!! Im getting a Trans Am soon, so maybe then it can rest in the garage more...

are you sure your tires werent already like this before your alignment. unless you alignment is severly out, i dont see tires haveing severe wear after 1 week of getting an alignment
Yes.. Im almost positive they were like this before the allignment. Im gonna replace the 2 front, and hope the allignment fixed the problem. I really enjoy the OEM Dunlop Sports. They are the best tire I have ever driven on in the rain, but just average in the snow...
Correct me if I'm wrong... but isn't there a difference between a 4 wheel alignment and a front end alignment? I've had two 4 wheel alignments and my steering is still off center, which is why both my mechanic and Costco recommended I get a front end alignment.

Yes, there is a difference between 2 wheel and 4 wheel alignment. However your caster camber and toe can all be within spec, but the steering wheel can be crooked. What happens is that the toe was set to spec with the steering wheel crooked. A good alignment shop will lock the steering wheel straight BEFORE they set the toe. See my post to Benz_Boi! I did alignments for GM dealers in my younger days, and the biggest complaint was crooked steering wheels. I always took the time to set it straight and test drive it to insure it was correct. Today people are getting lazy with the lasers. The basics are still the same-----hope this helps!
