My wife has a 1998 ML320, we got it with 107,000 miles and it now has 138,000. We have have owned it for 4-years. We are in the process of selling it and I need to work out a few problems that my wife was able to deal with but Im sure will hinder us when we try to sell it. We just got her a 2001 ML320with 36k M1 package and chrome nerf bars.
The 98 ML320 has a tough time starting when its cold out. It can take 5-6 tries for the engine to finally start. The strange thing is the engine starts then stops. The remotes also dont work but then they never did. We had the fuel filter upgrade done and new plugs when we got it and that didnt solve the problem. I replaced the CSP sensor last year, and the truck ran fine but still the hard cold start problem. The Dealer told us that the alternator was bad because the battery wasnt being charged but that turned out to be a bad battery and a negative battery cable. We also just replaced the motor mounts, fan clutch, updated the aux fan harness and tranny cooling lines.

Any ideas?
I also have a 98 ml 320 with the same problem, we norrowed it down to one of two things. First try a different key some times the chip in the key will let the car start, then stop the engine because the switch can't read the chip in the key.
Second as strange as it may sound the oil in the torque converter could be stiff causing the engine to stall until it gets the oil warm enough.
