fuel tank reserve?

sooo i ran out of gas yesterday...

anyways this led me to believe that i used up my "3 gallon reserve " as well- so I filled up the tank after putting in about 1/2 a gallon to get me to the nice ol gas station and i noticed my tank topped off at 17.87 gallons

which led me to believe the ML doesnt have a 3 gallon reserve like it claims it does in the manual.. interesting..

Both my 98 ML320 and the 02 ML500 That I had had a 3 gal reserve. You may have been on an incline which would have explained the engine quitting. Also fuel gages in any vehicle have tolerances and you were very close to the empty mark.

My car still has the gauge damping logic turned on, so it must be on level ground for quite a while before the guage will ready accurately after a fillup.

When the low fuel light comes on, there are three gallons remaining to empty and it is pretty accurate.

the car is supposed to have a standard 18 gallon tank + a 3 gallon reserve

I've been filling up 21.5 gallons in ML320 at least 3 times over the years, while it still run.
Don't think incline makes big difference in this car.
The fuel pump is located in higher point of the tank, than the lowest spot. The "leg" of the pump is venturi pump, that suck the fuel from the lowest point into the small reservoir around the pump.
Making long story short, that system is very efficient in sucking the tank dry, when standard setup can starve with 1 gallon of gas in it.
Filling up the car parked out of .level can make air bubble in the tank, what I suspect happened here.
