I'm just curious, but how do you know that its not your window switch? The switch is a common failure on MLs and easy to replace. I don't advocate replacing anything just to see if it fixes a problem, but I wonder what your symptoms are. When my window switch failed, my passenger side window would go down, but would only go up in 1/2 inch increments. The window switch tray (all windows, mirrors and door lock buttons are on a single plastic tray once you remove the wood grain cover) comes out as a unit.
Assuming you have determined it is the regulator that you need fix (mine snapped when putting down the window so it was heard) you will need a rivet gun, a good drill and drill bits, a second pair of hands if possible and patience. Firstly you need to take fitting from around the interior door handle off so you can undo screws and take the interior panel off (try not to break too many of the panel plugs) and remove lining. Take pictures of existing regulator (in up and down position) to use as reference and then begin drilling out all the rivets holding the regulator (about 6-8). Try not to have to resort to chiseling the tops off as the holes for the rivets in the door panel expand without too much force (and the heads on the rivets are not much bigger than the holes as is). It should take you about an hour if you have someone to help hold the window while fitting the new regulator. If you need pictures let me know as I might still have some of when I replaced mine.
Thanks to Rodney and his detailed instructions. It took me longer to figure out how to register and post on this site than it did to fix the switch (replaced previously by dealer under warranty twice with a switch "that does not have the same problem").
When my window is up and I hit the switch I hear the motor engage but the window will not move. I replaced the window switch about 1 year ago. Could it be the switch or would this be a sign of a bad regulator?
What is the cost to have the dealer or qualified mechanic replace or adjust the switch contacts? Has anyone paid to have this done or is this that simple of a DIY? I'm on vacation in Florida and my drivers side window is stuck halfway. the window was going up in 1/2 inch increments for 2 days and just will not go up any longer.
I am having the same issue with my ML, when I hit the switch for the drivers window, I can hear the motor engage but the window will not move up or down. Is this the regulator and if so how do you change it? (Photos would be nice)
