I have a problem, my engine checklight came on a few weeks ago, and i had the fault code read for free by a local garage. It was engine misfire on Cylinder 6, how ever it was not misfiring. They cleared the fault code, and the car was fine, yesterday i was driving along the motor way at about 70-80mph, and used kickdown to overtake, and the engine checklight came on. As i got off the motorway abt 4 miles later, the car started to shake badly and sounded like an air cooled VW. I drove home, and then as i was parking up it stalled. I then restarted the car, and the engine check light stayed on, but the misfire went away, the car now drives normally with the check light. I have just over 60k Miles
What the hell is going on with it?? Can any of you guys help with the following;-
1. Possible cause of this fault and misfire
2. cost of changing the parts,
3. a suitable diagnostics kit, that connects to lap top , i have tachopro but thats no good with MB, only works with VAG COM.
Must be the "facelift" since you didn't consider mileage worth posting
With higher mileage replacing spark plugs is always good idea and then you might want to go from there.
CE sometimes clears itself after several restarts with problem fixed, sometimes it needs to be reset.
So don't base any conclusions on the light timing. It might come late and go late.
Kajtek1 see the bottom of my post i said 60K Miles, it had new spark plugs at about 50k Miles. The light has gone off today, its so temprental. I just want to see what items i could replace to fix this issue, as its not ideal, coils, coil pack etc. Anyone else have any further ideas?
I had a similar issue with my 00 ML430 at around 55k. I used a code reader (http://obddiagnostics.com/) with a laptop to read my misfires over the period of 4-6 months because it was indeed intermittent. I would say about 50% of the time I would get an O2 sensor code. Before I changed that, I did the scheduled changes such as spark plugs and fuel filter. After getting the more misfires again, I went ahead and changed the 02 sensor the code reader referred to. All is fine now.
I have a 2000 w/ a 2002 facelift. (beside the point). At about 85000 miles, i had the same thing happen. I was having misfires on the driver side bank as well as the horrible vibrating and of course the check engine light. When restarted, it'd be fine for a while until it went to kick-down when going up a hill. Turned out...my catylitic converters on driver side exhaust were shot (MB recall) and that they had disentegrated into a fine sand, and plugged up the second cat, creating too much backpressure, adn causing the misfire. (there are four cat converters on the damn thing). Sooo check for cracks in your cats and see what they look like. Wait until they are cool and knock on them w/ your hammer (lightly!!) and see what it sounds like. Hallow...trouble. Solid...(Sand buildup) trouble....somewhere in between...ok. Do both sides and go from there....you'll know what i mean. Maybe its not that at all..but thats my experience.
i have the same problem (only at idealing ) with c240 2002, what happend to your car, any idea how to fixed it. they already replaced ignition coils engine mounts still it does vibrate specially cold starts. it goes away soem times and coems back next traffic light
month ago had a CEL- coded as PO304. With 62000 miles already so I decided to change all 12 spark plug and the wire set. ML runs so smooooooooooooooth now.

Ranjit,
Hi! Try to swap the spark plug cables on cylinder 6 to cylinder 5 and see if the misfire follows the cable. Cylinder 6 will be on the driver side,on a v6 it will be the rear most .
