Dumb question, but will the alarm go off if I unlock my car with just the key? Help!

I dropped my key fob for my 1999 ML430. Now the buttons won't lock/unlock it. I've replaced the batteries and no luck.

I've never tried unlocking the car with just the key.. the alarm shouldn't go off, should it?

I'd like to say yes.
But it's pretty easy to test...

So the alarm should go off if I unlock the car by inserting the key in the lock and turning it?? How come?

I don't want to test it since I live in an apartment complex and everyone will be looking, and since they fob doesn't work I don't think I'd be able to turn it off

yes, if you don't deactivate the alarm and just open the car with the manual key, the alarm will go off.

Thanks.. I guess it's time to call Mercedes then? My key doesn't work and I don't have an extra (only got one with the car).

Yes the alarm will go off when opening with the key unless it was not locked with the remote. To silence, just put the key in the ignition and start the car.

Good info to have...

Just open the door, let the alarm go off for a bit, and start the car. Then just lock the car again with the key only, and you should be good to go.

Which is in my glove compartment!

Anywho, I decided to unlock the car with the key. Alarm went off, got in and started it up. I drove to Radio Shack to see about some new batteries since I don't know if maybe the ones I had in the closet were still ok.

So get this.. when I get to the parking lot, turn the car off, step out and close the door, I hit the lock button on the key and it worked! Hit unlock, car unlocked!

*shrug* I don't get it. They didn't work for a good half hour after dropping them but now they work just fine with the same old batteries. I still bought some new ones just incase, cause ya never know.

Thanks for the help everybody
