Problem with Navigation Please help Searching and can't find answers

I have been seraching this forum for few hours and I can't find an answer to my question. there is so much info these days which is great but i think they deleted some old posts form 01 and 02. anyway few years ago i had found this post but now it's gone.

I just installed CD navigation in my 2001 ML320. Bought the splitter and cables installed it according to MB direction a pdf. file i had from years ago.

i turned it on and the MSC tells me that navigation is not installed but it plays CDs when i put it in. i don't know if i missed something and something else has to be pluged in.

can someone please tell me where to find instructions to install the navigation with pictures for the 2001 year?

behind the MSC unit do i just plug in the naviation drive to the MSC or is there something else that had to be done.

Please help

thanks

After the CD navigation unit is installed and plugged in, the GPS antenna connected and a navigation CD inserted in the drive it should work.

With an audio CD in the drive the screen should look like this:

With a navigation CD in the drive it should look like this:

As Wolfgang mentioned it should work if everything is plugged in. However, even without any splitters and/or antennas connected the MCS will recognize that the drive is a navigation drive when you press NAVI - the fact that it tells you no navigation is installed yet it plays audio probably means that you have a CD player and not navigation drive

What navigation disc are you using?
If you've popped in a valid, working Navigation disc (make sure it's the CD version not the DVD version if you have the CD based drive) it should work.

If it doesn't, as redeye mentioned, you have a single CD player in there, not a NAV drive

thanks guys

where does the GPS ANNTENA plugs in on the back. Reading different posts I found out it is a square gray plug which I found but don't know where to plug it in.

Also I bought the Nav discs on ebay and they were copies but the guy said that they would work.

here is what i installed;

Well, 163-820-09-89 refres to the CD navigation drive allright (the CD player is 163-820-08-89) BUT the model number MD3910 refers to the CD player; the CD-based navigation drive is BN5110 to the best of my knowledge.

I think your seller has made a mistake and sold you a CD player...

Most likely an intentional mistake, now try to find him!! If it is a Nav unit it may need to be coded by the Star system for the MCS to recognize that its there.

Not on a 2001 (or any W163 for that matter) - only version coding ever required was to retrieve navi voice on 2002+ models.

If it is a navi drive, after the plug shown in figures 12 and 13 is connected the MCS will see it as such:

you guys are right

this is a cd player. it doesn't have the GPS anntena plug.

i just emailed the seller. i payed though pay pal so i am safe and seems like he prabolly owns one of those ebay store and half of the time doesn't know what he is selling.

what makes me angry is that is spend all this time trying to figure out what i did wrong when installing it. thanks very much for saving me a trip to the dealer which i always hate.

Buying anything on E Bay is always a risk of losing money and/or lots of your time. By the time you get done IF you even get satisfaction it would have been less costly to buy a new one from a dealer if you figure what your time is worth. Remember you always get what you pay for, there is no free lunch!!
