I have a 2000 ML 430 w/ ~ 100K mi. on it. I bought it new, but for several reasons I have decided to start doing what work I can on it myself.
I have several problems with it that I need to address, many of which I've seen similar problems posted on this board, but I have not seen all the same symptoms or definitive answers to some of my issues.
1. OBD II DCT codes and scanners. A device that can diagnose and monitor problems with my car is going to be essential. One of the main issues I am having is w/ the BAS/ESP system. The problem has existed since I bought the car. I've taken it to the dealer numerous times and had others look at it as well. They've replaced the steering column, the brake switch, the travel sensor and several other things I cannot remember. It's an intermittent problem that often initially expresses itself when I make a slow 90 degree turn from one street to another. It engages the ESP on the inside front wheel. Any recommendations on a device that will decipher DCTs for the entire system as well as the BAS/ESP system would be greatly appreciated.
2. I've pretty much decided to get away from the standard MB brake pads and rotors as I have to replace them about every 15K miles. Does anyone know of a good reason why I should not? Does anyone have any recommendations on replacement parts?
3. Where should I buy parts, spark plugs, brake pads, air filters, oil filters etc etc, and what brands are recommended?
4. I bought the Star Service Manual for the W163 M Class. Any recommendations for other manuals I should have?
I know these questions will sound very elementary to many of you, but not only is this the 1st new car I've ever bought, it's also the 1st non-American car I've ever owned, and while I did almost all the work on my previous cars myself, I'm a little intimidated by my lack of knowledge of the components, repair and maintenance procedures and I don't want to screw it up.
Welcome RichardG!! I think you are on the right path, however I am in a similar boat and am looking forward to the vets answering your Qs. I just bought my (wifes) 1st ML320 and am trying to set myself up to do the majority of my maintenance. You can probably find alot of the answers if you search the forums, particularly about brakes. As far as where to buy parts, I tend to think its what you buy not where you buy it, in other words as long as it is quality - price rules. There are some things to go OEM on and others Aftermarket works better.
