Did you have the truck in neutral with the emergency brake pressed? I find that without my e-brake, it won't engage.
Yes to both Bogie. Still didn't work. I never use it but someday I may actually need to and it drives me nuts if I have something broken on my vehicle that is supposed to work. Unless someone knows of a quick and easy fix I'll let the dealer fix it next time it is due for service. Thanks for the response.

After searching several forums I saw in a European Benz Forum that the "low range motor" could be the culprit and is fairly easy to replace ("easily reachable without lifting the car") and has a history of being problematic. Can anyone point me to some instructions on how to go about replacing this? I've looked, believe me. If it is the part in the picture it doesn't seem too difficult. I'm going to try to attach a couple pictures from another Forum. Is the part indicated by the blue line the low range motor or in the other, item "6"???

Reason: Adding attachment

Yes the blue line indicates the motor. Seeing as how the motor is rarely used it may just have some corrosion on it causing intermittent problems. Should be an easy fix. I would try engaging & disengaging several times within a week before replacing. I may just need some use.
I have never used the e-brake, however my foot is on the regular brake pedal with ML in neutral.
To switch on:
1. Stop the vehicle
2. Move transmission selector lever to position "N"
3. Push top end of switch. The LOW RANGE indicator lamp in the instrument cluster blinks three times during the changeover.
Once the changeover is complete, the indicator lamp lights up continuously.
Note:
If the indicator lamp blinks five times, one or more switching conditions were not observed,or the Low Range mode is defective.

That describes mine. I have tried every combination possible to get it to work to no avail. If someone has changed one of these out I would appreciate any feedback as to difficulty and cost. AND, did it solve the problem? ML Precision: Thanks for the feedback. I'll try looking at the connections to see if that could be the problem.
It should take you under 20 minutes to replace. There is a few bolts that hold it in, the electrical connector(which can be a p.i.t.a. if its corroded). Just unbolt and slide it out. The shaft has splines that engage in the transfer case. Once the new one is installed, just engage the low range a few times and it will relearn the motor position. Its a common problem for ML's, most people will never know there is anything wrong because they will never use it.
