I have seen pics where some of you are playing DVD movies on your OEM NAV unit. Does anyone have instructions/pics on how to do this? What items are needed?

RE: ??Converting 2003 ML Nav Unit to play DVD Movies?
I am also attempting to do this with my MCS... if you are interested I am working with a local audio shop in making it work, send me a PM and once I have a final price I can let you know, some of the parts are expensive like and RCA to RGB converter
RE: ??Converting 2003 ML Nav Unit to play DVD Movies?
Just to let you know, it is illegal to have any TV, or movie screen in front of the driver activated, while the gears are in drive position. Mapping programs are different. Lot of people do illegal conversions, but better not let the cops see it, while you are driving.

In many states, the laws are written in such a way that the radio station display on the MCS would be illegal, as would a NAV screen. Basically the wording of “video or “television is the issue and it is left up to the court’s interpretation. Here’s a link that includes the wording of state laws, although I am not sure how up to date the information is:
RE: ??Converting 2003 ML Nav Unit to play DVD Movies?
Well here is my 2 cents ... Wolfgang & I & a heapof others have discussed this to the limit.
It is possible in all cases!!! Firstly the point is to determine what OEM unit we are talking about.
The MCS does not have native support for VIDEO input. The Comand however has builtin suppoert for an OEM TV Tuner (NOT VIDEO SOURCES LIKE DVD PLAYER, DIGITAL CAMERA, ETC....).
So havin said this initially lets look at each unit seperately:-
COMAND
----------------
The only way to get video to play on the OEM headunit is to get a TV-Tuner , or an adapter (DIETZ) that simulates a TV Tuner. Once you have either of these , you can connect other video sources via chinch connects. i.e in the case of TV-Tuner , the DVD player (in my case PS2 game console that double as a DVD Player & MP3 Player), or other source will be piggy backed to it.
When you want to use that video source , you push the TV button on the comand unit , then select the respective aux connector via the turn dial.
The Advantage of the TV-Tuner is obvious ... watch tv + connect 2 independant video sources.
The latest version of the multimedia adapters (that's what the tuner simulation hardware is called) is a great piece of hardware that allows you to connect a digital terrestrial tv tuner to the comand head unit and control it as I described above ... including external audio sources.
The best place to buy something like this is ebay.de! The multimedia adapter costs 199 Euros, and the analog tuner 250-600 Euros (1200 Euros at the dealer). I got lucky and managed to grab a good unit for 121 Euros.
MCS
---------------
Up until recently there was no way to connect video sources to a MCS unit. Now there are several US firms that make the equivilant of the DIETZ multimedia adapter. This adapter then will give you any video connectivity. Wolfgang checked into this and came up with the latest DIY price 250$US.
..... now for some weblinks!

RE: ??Converting 2003 ML Nav Unit to play DVD Movies?
It just dawned on me that CoBenz’s question is in regard to using the NAV DVD drive to play DVD video (presumably displayed on the MCS’s screen). Pleubner’s excellent (as always) info only addresses the display of an external video source on the screen. I know that on the newer COMAND systems, such as in the S and SL classes, the in-dash player is a DVD drive and will play DVD video on the COMAND screen. Of course the display is disabled on US models, but it still plays the audio tracks as well as MP3’s.
Like the OP, I wonder if it’s possible to use the MCS’s DVD NAV to play DVD video. In my case, I don’t necessarily want to watch the video on the ML’s screen, but I’d love to have it play the audio through the MCS and display the video on my rear-seat screen. If I could do that, I’d invest in a DVD NAV drive. By the way, has anyone with a DVD NAV drive tried to play a DVD on it? Can you use it to play MP3’s? Will it at least play the audio from a DVD video?

Let me guess?
They are afraid, that you might spill the coffee you are drinking on the instrument cluser and cell phone (in your hand), while you watch comedy at 75 MPH?
