hey gravel, did you try swithing your fuel pump relay with another one that works? Try that first. If it doesn't work, the next best thing to do is to remove the fuel filter and the fuel pump. then you can clean the small filter that is attached to the bottom of the fuel pump. If you back flush, the stuff that is clogging up the pump and filter will end up in your fuel tank, then you have to do it again down the road. I took mine out and cleaned the pump filter and fuel filter with starting fluid and all the stuff that was in it came out, the stuff was black. I still have it in a couple of small gas cans.

Hi bitt, ive flushed the filter out mine was the same like pond water,i swapped the relay stilll the same but ive noticed that when i put the ignition2 position you can hear the pump come on, sometimes it dosent come on, i know it might shut off after the fuel lines are pressurised but this happens when the car has been left overnight , my next step is to look at the pump when ive got time .
ill keep you informed.

Gravel, There is also a smaller filter attached to the bottom of the fuel pump, most of the stuff you saw come out of the fuel filter is also in that filter. I know it’s a pain to get out, but you have to do it. if it is clogged there, your not going to get any fuel pressure. After you have cleaned the filter and pump, you can test the pump and flush the rest of the fuel line by turning the pump on by jumpering it. It goes as follows, first get about 3 or four feet of that clear rubber tubing, I used 5/8 inch. And also get an empty gas can or something to hold the fuel. Take the fuel line off the fuel rail and slip the tubing over the line, you can hold it in place with nylon zip ties if you have them. Then place the other end into the gas can, you can route the tubing thru the bottom of driver side wheel well, its easier. The next step is to take your fuse cover off, find the fuel pump relay (k3), make a couple of 3 inch jumpers with 12 gauge wires, I put a couple of flat terminals on one side and female side on the other side so that you can put a 15 amp fuse on it. Next pull the fuel pump relay out, make sure the tubing is attached to fuel line and is routed into the gas can. Ok now find the two slots labeled 3 and 5 where you pulled the relay out. It should be the ones parallel to the front wheels. Insert the jumpers there. One jumper per slot. The pump will come on at that point, it is going to stay on until you unplug it. You don’t need to turn the key on at that point, your bypassing the ignition switch. You should be able to flush out what ever is left in the fuel line, you can watch the fuel change colors, it should turn dark to clear. Once it turns clear you can remove the jumpers. If all that happens, there is nothing wrong with your fuel pump. Remember, even when you leave the ML over night, the fuel line should hold about 36 lbs of pressure, if you don’t have any leaks. It only takes a split second to pressurize the line. And again, if the small filter on bottom of fuel pump is clogged, the pump will stop working.

Dumb question...I just purchased a new fuel filter for my brother's 2000 ML320. The fuel filter is part 1634770701 (Mahle KL437). The new filter did not come with new fuel lines. I read about the "filter upgrade" in previous posts and was wondering if I need to access the fuel pump to install this filter? Also, do I need to purchase additional "upgraded" fuel lines?

I am hoping that this filter is a direct replacement and that I can install it without removing the rear seat and purchasing additional parts.

Thanks for your help.

Bill

Answer to your questions are yes, yes and no. Best thing you can do is to return that new filter and buy the old version. Some stores were still selling it last time I checked 4 months ago.

What you would have to do is remove the left rear tire and then the plastic fender liner and look at the filter. If it looks like the diagram in the pdf then you have no problem. If it doesn't then you need the additional lines.

Thanks guys. Looks like I need to purchase a few other items. It looks like I need a new "fuel feed line" and "fuel return line." Is this correct?

Well, it all depends whether or not you looked first.
