help! have been offered some cheap, brand new 03 spec headlamps for my 99 ML here in uk, but they are for a left hand drive vehicle, and being in UK, beams will point wrong way, does anyone know if they can be adjusted? some BMW's can just have inner lamps turned to change beam direction, so was hoping I can do same.
P.S. please hurry, won't be there for long...
thanks, Martyn
RE: converting projector lights to right hand drive
My right hand drive bi-xenons (HID) have a lever in them which removes the raised portion of the dipped beam so it is flat from left to right (instead of being raised on the left).
The lever is next to the main bulb, up is normal, down is flat.
The question is: do the left hand drive units have the same facility?
The lever moves a masking plate and is a part of the projector lamp assembly, by which I mean it has nothing to do with the bulb being HID bi-xenon or halogen.
Please let us know the answer.
In addition to this there are two aiming adjustments on each lamp which will suffice to set the beams correctly for right hand drive use.

spoke to guy selling lamps, he can't see a lever, but do you think there's enough adjustment on light? as it's a 99, i think i've got to move some connection pins in h/lamp plug, so it has to get through MOT, as i won't be able to swap back.

If there is no lever the lamps will not be useful in Britain. The adjustments provide sufficient left and right and up and down adjustment, but no adjustment can compensate for the dip being to the wrong side.
The lever does the following:
____/---- becomes _________
Without the lever you will be stuck with the raised portion of the dipped beam on the wrong side and it will not pass the mot.
RE: converting projector lights to right hand drive
Our friend Woz was trying to do this for his HID lights. I don’t believe he ever found a solution. It seems like the only way to truly fix this would be to actually remove the projector lens system and actually reverse the shutter inside that creates the beam pattern. That is, of course, assuming the shutter is removable and reversible.

My lever moves a separate shutter piece, without this driving on the European continent at night would not be recommended and the police might stop you.
I think the only way to remove the projector assembly is to undo the glue and remove the front plastic window.
