Catalytic converters....

What a mess....

Started last week.

Driving through a shallow puddle that was on the passenger side. Splash into the front wheel well, and putter, putter, putter.

Water into the exhaust system always fun....

Got to the point where it sounded like a 2000 ML 430 was a 1968 Mustang with ported exhaust. That would be cool, but its a Mercedes...

Long and the short of it? MBUSA has stated they are on the hook for it. Good to know, and just an FYI. When the Cats go bad, they go QUICK on this vehicle.

RE: Catalytic converters....

Thats exactly what happened to me!

I drove through a little water puddle the other day and boouummm it sounded like my exhaust broke.

I went to a local exhaust shop and they fixed it for $60. At that time I didnt know about the cat recall.

I'm still waiting for the recall notification from MBUSA, and then I'll hopefully get the $60 back.

That reminds me of when I was driving home yesterday. I was running down the Interstate at about 85mph and I heard this throaty engine noise behind me. I expected some big pickup truck or muscle car with Flowmasters to pass me, but it was a guy in a late 1970’s model 450SL! That just wasn’t right! [:0]

It was pretty cool pulling into the stealership and seeing the blue hairs turning their heads at this roaring rumbling M Class pulling in.

My service advisor came out and asked me what we needed done.

I fired it up and it was pretty obvious. He actually jumped.

Update.......

If you have your cat crap out before you get your recall notice?

Its gonna be a while.

I took my ML in on Tuesday for the Blown Cat and the harmonic balancer recall, and its going to be next week before I can get it back.

At least I have a zippy little C280W to play around with at MBUSAs expense.

RE: Catalytic converters....

So that means that a rental car is provided by the dealer?? I called them and asked if the recall said anything about a rental car, but they said no.

Same with my dealer, I wonder if a call is placed to MB they can confirm whether or not it is dealers choice to and good will or if MB is paying for some loaners. I would hope they were consistent across the country.

RE: Catalytic converters....

Still waiting....

Good lord.

Just how many of these cats have crapped out?

They have had my ML since last Monday.

My goal is to bring the poor tiny little C280 past the 1000 mile mark.

I got it with just under 300... [:D]

RE: Catalytic converters....

My cats went out in Feb. on my 1999 ML430 (61,500 miles) and I finally got around to taking it in last April! The noise wasn't bad but my mileage went down and I could hear a rattle when it was running.

They had it three days, I got a 2005 ML500 loaner, and had the HB check done too.

Overall, a good experience for a dealer.

RE: Catalytic converters....

All would be find and dandy if I could GET it back from the dealer...

What a nightmare!

I appreciate having a loaner car but I am 6'4" and 260lbs, so a tiny little C280 is a PITA to get out of...
