greetings ppl...new to the forums here and the MB world in general.
had an acura integra for two years then a VW Corrado for three, learned alot about cars from that VW...fixing and modding became weekly visits to the local performance shop back in cleveland OH.
anyhow..im down in raleigh NC now and ive had this great looking/driving black 2000 ML320 for about three months now and have JUST found these forums...great resource i might add...i don't plan to mod this car out, just keep it nice and always maintained/pampered.
my car has the large LCD flip-down display console with a tape player underneath...no CD player!
* what are my options for a new CD player, to i have to get something stock ($?) or other...
* the clock on the upper-console is out too.
* the keyless entry doesnt work...not sure if it is the system inside car or keys themselves...the key had never worked well, and then just stopped one day. the locks sometimes flip up and down when driving away from being parked instead of auto-locking.
eventually i want to get new tires and wheels haven't decided on what yet...i like the wider/lower stance on some of the gallery pics.
i really like this auto so far...mine had 85K miles when i bought it and had been maintained well by the former previous owner, a barber shop owner in his mid 50's...it really turns heads and is very sharp, the ride is nice and the gas economy for an SUV isnt too bad, although gas prices right now suck!...but overall i like it and im glad i decided to go with the ML320.
Welcome aboard as far as the CD player mine also just had the tape player when I bought it so I purchased the oem 6 cd changer that goes in the rear of the vehicle. Your ML already has the cables run for that so I believe its the easiest to install without having to go to a shop just plug and play you see them sometimes on ebay.
I went with the 18" rims with 285/50 R18 Dunlop tires and I like the way it looks and the ride dont suffer that much.
Never say Never about not modding especially once you see what some of the members here do with there ML's you get bite with mod bug.

Welcome to the forum. I just recently purchased (3mo. ago)a 1999 ML320 and am very happy with it so far.
To answer some of your questions, this is what I have learned so far.
1) If early MY2000 the CD changer is non-fiber optic, late MY200 and above is fiber optic bus. You can tell by removing the panel on right hand side in hatch area. There should be a cable and possibly a mounting bracket for the changer there. If the connector on the cable is white with 6 or 8 pins (can't remember)it is probably non-fiber. If two cables are found(one power and the other fiber)then you have fiber changer. You can find both types on ebay pretty cheap. I replaced a broken non-fiber changer when I bought my 1999 for $72 from ebay.
2) Not 100% sure about MY2000, but MY1999 the overhead console is on FUSE #20 in fusebox under the hood. Probably just a burnt fuse, this is apparently pretty common, many unrelated things running on this fuse.
3) Probably just dead battery in remote. Search the forums for replacement proceedure. Dealers want you to buy a new remote and claim they need to be specially programmed. They use a rolling code scheme like garage door openers. To program them you just need to hold the remote near the car and go thru a button sequence for them to learn the code. Worth a try to replace battery before spending more than $100 for new remote.
Search the BenzWorld and M class outpost sites for more info on this and other things you may need.
You can also get a CD player that slots in behind that dropdown screen of your MCS. Ebay = dirt cheap. Or get a CD-navigation drive that will add navigation and CD capability, but no map data beyond 2004. Or get a DVD-navigation drive that wil play CD's and navigate quicker (with updated maps). Navigation needs some additional parts on your car though. Oh-oh; sounds like modding. I retract this reply.....
