It's just a plain old " BAS/ESP " light,, all by itself,,, The performance of the vehicle is not affected in any way,,,acceleration is fine, no hesitation,,,, just an annoying light,,,
Thanks Wolfgang, the visual definitely helps. In my case, with my 02 ML320 and my 01 E430, the brake switch resolved the problem when the following lights came on: BAS/ESP, ABS and the brake pads worn. I don't recall when they came on - while driving or when I started the vehicles. In any case, both ABS and ESP were functioning fine - I took a risk and tested them!!! In the case of my 05 500, the lights came on as I started the truck in a mall parking lot, in the rain. Only this time, the ABS light was missing. The system disabled the shifter while the lights were on. After I turned off the truck and restarted, everything was fine. The next day, I was at the shop thinking it was the brake switch again. Eeven though I told the techs about the brake light switch, their diagnosis came out to be a control unit. Unit was replaced and I have not had the problem anymore.
Callcover's problem may not be the brake switch, seeing that he's had it changed once. I'd follow sosh's advice and take the truck in, or do the Autozone thing if the have the capability to diagnose the ML's codes. But I'd not just throw in a brake switch regardless of price. One thing to do is take out the brake switch and check for continuity - it can't be that complicated. If there's no continuity, replace the switch. If there is, problem most likely somewhere else.
