what does the BAS ESP light mean?

i was driving my car today and suddenly the accleration shut down, it seemed like the call stalled and the BAS ESP light turned on. i stopped the car and restarted it, it worked fine.

what does that BAS ESP light mean

and

why does it turn on? is there a way to prevent it from turning on.

and also, when i start my car and begin to drive, the engine seems to lag. i step on the gas but it doesn't really accelerate. the rpm doesn't go over 2.5x. this happens for a little bit then it beings to run smoother.

any idea why this happens?

thank you

I am not an expert, but here are my thoughts...

You have a bad sensor.

That indicator means there is a problem detected with your traction control (electronic skid protection) system.

I am speculating, but if the system detects what it thinks is a difference in wheel speed it will cut throttle and/or apply brake to balance it out.

It sounds like the system thinks you are spinning a wheel in a loss of traction scenario, or that you are entering a turn to quickly.

Get it checked out.

My light has gone on before after driving through deep water pulling my boat out of the water...but there was no associated change in behaviour of the ML and it went off the next time I started the car.

My buddy's ML500 did this when he stomped on it at a stop light...he drive it home with no troubles and cleared the code with his ODBII scanner.

RE: what does the BAS ESP light mean?

My guess is that you have a bad sensor, too. When my vehicle was new, everytime I accelerated fast, my ML will sudden choke down and the BAS/ESP light will come on and you would hear the brakes vibrating trying to incorrectly adjust the speed/direction.

This was different from the fuel pump problem in that a bad sensor will normally just slow down, the BAS/ESP light will come on, and you will hear the brakes vibrating normally on the wheel with the bad sensor.

Good luck..

Black, 18" AMG Wheels, 285/60R18 Yokohama Geolander HTS + Bi-Xenons(+ Drew's e-code mod, though the reflectors rusted off and do not give out much light anymore), Yakima roof bars, Akebono pads all around. Former vehicle 2001 ML 320 with 108K miles, when traded, and a large repair/defect history. After all these years of owning my current 2005 ML 500, it is a major unreliable vehicle with a very large/expensive repair/defect history and has been like this since brand new.
