Changing gear ratio???

Hey guys, I wanted to know if there was a way to change the gear ratio in the diffs to get a better crawl ratio. I know it is done on tons of other vehicles, but I'm not sure they make other gear ratios for the ML. Can anyone tell me if another ML model has a steeper gear ratio than the 320?? Thanks!

RE: Changing gear ratio???

Let's see. [:)]

3.70:1 ML320, ML350, ML500

3.46:1 ML430, ML270 CDI, ML55 AMG

3.09:1 ML400 CDI

So... it seems to be difficult to improve on 3.70:1 by using M-Class diffs?

RE: Changing gear ratio???

Whether they would be interchangeable or not I don't know, but the 06 ML's have 3.90 differential gears! [8D]

RE: Changing gear ratio???

Could the 320 pull the 3.46 gears? Would love to better my 15mpg. Expect I would swap for a used one from a 430. Are the rear brakes the same?

But that's only a 7% difference, and 16 MPG is still not good. Seems your problems lie elsewhere, maybe a lead foot, or all in town driving? My trip computer indicates 23.8 MPG at present after some airport runs on standard tires...

RE: Changing gear ratio???

I would not believe the trip computer. At best it will indicate an unrealistically optimal short run. More likely, it is inaccurate as measuring low flow rates is tricky. The only thing that counts is gallons to fill a nearly empty tank divided by the trip odometer that was reset at the previous tank fillup (or however you Europeans like to measure it...).

RE: Changing gear ratio???

I consistently get 17 mpg in my ML430 with mixed urban driving. Maybe you should swap the whole vehicle!

RE: Changing gear ratio???

Thanks for the replies guys, I guess I'm stuck with these gears. tires that are much bigger and heavier wont be an option anymore. LOL
