They are distinctly bighter and color shifted to a slightly bluish white, like a standard "cool" fluorescent light. The result is backup lights that really grab the attention of others, and also helps to light things up through the dark privacy glass at night. I checked the heating of the plastic lens after a minute or so and found it to be acceptable. I paid a total of about US$13.50 for two packs shipped to my home.
I also tried a 50 watt backup bulb, but found it to be too hot for the plastic housing. 35 watts seems to be the right amount of power.

Thanks for the info. I have the 50 watt halogens bulbs from DesignTech in the ML (and have had them since my ML was new) and they work well as long as you do not leave them on for more than 2 minutes. Since it is unlikely that one will be reversing for that long, it is a non-issue [:)]
