Tofino BC is a great little town on the west coast of Vancouver island. Great place to go surfing Canadian style with ocean temperatures of 6 Deg it is not for the faint of heart! The ML did very well to get the family safely from Edmonton to Tofino and back. We also made a side trip to Bamfield which is only accessible by logging road. Glad I had the ML for that part the cabin filter sure cleared the dust out of the air. My ML also turned 200,000KM on the trip! Here are some stats for the trip.
Total KM 3473 2158 Miles
Fuel 467Liters 123 Gallons US
$498.80 CAN $412.81 USD
$1.07/L $3.36/Gallon
13.4L/100KM 17.5 MPG
With the OD not the Trip Computer
I am running x-terrains 265/75-16 so my OD is 8.9% out so with this in mind I really did
KM 3782 2350 Miles
Fuel 467Liters 123 Gallons US
$498.80 CAN $412.81 USD
$1.07/L $3.36/Gallon
12.3L/100KM 19.1 MPG
Used Shell 91 Octane Vpower for the entire trip. Very good gas mileage considering I had the box on the roof and the truck loaded to the top!
I see you arrived in the good weather while here on the wet(not a typo)coast. While on the road in/out of Bamfield you passed a P-16 hauling some BC pecker poles. If he carring old growth he would have probable had only 3 logs on board. One day I'll have drive up to FM to see my sister, instead of her always flying here to see us, but that would mean I would have to take off the rain tires and put on some S/M's. [:)]
Hey jojorom would you happen to have some good forestry service maps of the south west between Bamfield and Victoria or around Port Renfrew? There are so many roads out their I would love to explore even drive right to the top of some of those mountains! I also have heard that there is a beach trail around Ucluelet that is supposed to be spectacular. I will be back out their early September to hike the west coast trail (again) and would love to spend an extra day 4x4ing around Bamfield. Let me know, or where to get one when I get to the island again.
Nice trip that! How many times did you have to unpack that ML? We also did a road trip: 4500km round (via Victoria, Seattle & Helena) but in a rented Astro Van. Trip was great even though the wheels were junk!
Sorry Swizzles, I personally don't do much off roading. It's the wifes ML and she thinks speed bumps at the malls are all-terrain conditions. And the Sube.... well, you know, nice ride but... I'll do my best to look into it for you over the next week or so, no guaranties. If you do the west coast trail hike/drive you can get there three ways. One, is thru Victoria, Sooke, Renfrew to Cowichian Lake. Or come from Victoria via Hwy 1, pass thru Duncan and then enter the Cowichian Lake side, thirdly, come from the Nanaimo side, drive south to Cowichian Lake. Anyway you choose, you can do the "WestCoast Trail" very enjoyable ( they say ) but be prepared for anything in the month of Sept. This might be Lotus land but it's not perfect. Yet!!!
Hey Swizzles if your out there, I made a few phone calls and I was able to secure a map of the Souths logging roads. PM me so I can forward it to you and give you more info. I'll have the map tomorrow, the 19th., apparently the hike is by appointment only.
