I don't know what kind of oil the dealer was using at the time, but I was shoked to see that my oil cap had a thick layer of sludge impregnated all over it, and I just really hate to imagine how the rest of the engine was looking at that time.
When you say “sludge was found in your oil cap, was that a mushy, gelatin-like material that could be wiped away with a cloth? If so, that is normal as it’s just the result on small amounts of moisture in the oil condensing on the highest and coolest point. Sludge is more like the consistency of tar and cannot easily be wiped away. It’s rare that it would appear on the oil filler cap. Mostly it’s found in the far corners of the oil pan where the oil settles away from moving parts.
