Well tonight I will check the liitle computer and look for the wrench to see what it says... I just dont know when the oil was changed last so ..I want to stay on top of it. Ill report my findings...
M
Once it is not free anymore I would like to learn to do it myself for sure...
I guess Ill have to do a search in this forum for step by step..
I assume going to a jiffy lube is not the right way to treat the car?

I am the 2nd owner of my 2002 ml I got it with 16,900 miles on it and I just clicked over to 20k.. When do I need to change the oil? In the past I would do it every 3k miles for my other cars...but what about the ML?
DO I NEED to bring to MB to do it?
thanks
Matt

There are two knobs at the bottom of the speedo - one on the left and the other on the right. Press the left one twice quickly. The display will show either one wrench with some number, two wrenches with some number or some number with a [b]d[/d] after it. If it's one wrench, you're due for A service at whatever mileage is displayed - the number after the wrench is the mileage interval before service. If it's two wrenches, you're due for B service. Otherwise, the display is the number of days left before service.

See the link below for the best price that I have found on the MANN HU718/5X fleece filter. This is the same filter that Mercedes sells @ approximately $20.00 each. At allgermanparts this filter is $11.75. I ordered four and with shipping it came to $54.49 or $13.62 per filter. Not too shabby!
It will change according to your driving habits. For instance, I chance my oil every 10K miles or less (usually around 8K) but my FSS always says I have at least 5K miles left. The FSS (flexable service system) is just that...flexable according to your driving. I do alot of highway driving so my seems to last alot longer.
However, even though you can go as much as 25,000 miles or 1 year with some synthetic oils, it is recommended by many, including some MB techs, that you change the oil filter every 3K-5K miles. The new fleece filters are supposed to last longer but is $10 really worth your engine taking a dump? Dirt is the #1 killer of engines. I won't take those kind of chances.

tech who owned his own shop that the oil is fine for 10K but the filters are absolutely not [on a '99 ML at least]. I can't speak for new filters as this was in 2003 when he told me.
I change my oil and filter when the FSS says 5,000 and then again when it is at zero. Dealer then resets to 10K and I repeat the process.
