Can't stand the rattle

When I had the loaner (05 ML500) one of the things I noticed is that MB, in a stroke of genius added two more screw holes for the rear license plate whereas my 99 only has two, and it sounds like she's breaking up everytime I let down the door. Does anyone know of a fix for this.....I'm not afraid to break out the drill if I have to. Thanks

RE: Can't stand the rattle

I haven't put the plates on mine yet, but I've experienced this on other vehicles and solved it by putting a strip of adhesive foam behind the plate. Weather stripping material (for residential doors - get it at Home Depot/Lowes/etc) usually works well and will absorb any vibration in the plate.

Why didn't I think of that? Thanks Dennis and Welcome.

RE: Can't stand the rattle

You can also use a frame for the plate. This stops the flexing and resultant noise.

I have a stainless steel one on there now which accounts for the majority of the clatter [:(!]

Install a nice subwoofer in the back and enjoy the extra boost the license plate gives you? I pulled up next to a Civic once and my buddy was wondering what the mysterious buzzing was...[:)]

RE: Can't stand the rattle

My 01' 320 has 4 holes...still rattled a tad bit so I used some rubber washers under the screw heads - worked like a charm!

RE: Can't stand the rattle

Hey Treeman, I have the same 4 bolt set-up on my '01 ML 320. The dealer added their faceplate and rubber washers. They also adjusted the tailgate. That took care of the rattle and rumble.
