Rear twin Cup Holder problem

Hi Guys

My wife has somehow(I have no idea how she managed this)popped the rear twin cupholders out from the centre console and in doing so also managed to dislodge two plastic drums about 15mm diameter and about 25mm long, along with two round spring type bands.

I have removed the centre console lid and the lower storage box to get a look inside but for the life of me can't figure out how to remove the black plastic frame surround( I removed the two screws at the back of the frame).

I need to remove the frame so that I can refit the cup holder and figure out where to attach the spring clips as this makes it far easier than lying on the floor and holding a torch.

Thanks in advance

Russ

RE: Rear twin Cup Holder problem

Russ, the rear seat cupholder can be removed without dismantling the center console. In the bottom each of the two “cups, there is a screw. Remove those screws and the black plastic cupholder will separate from the trim-colored door panel. From there, you should be able to remove everything but the door itself. It’s been a while since I disassembled mine (I did it years ago to install a 12 port), but I recall that it was not difficult to figure out where the springs and retainers went and how to get everything back in place. Good luck!

RE: Rear twin Cup Holder problem

Hi Rodney

This is not the cup holder on the door, its the one for the rear passengers and is part of the center storage console and is located under the rear vents

These cup holders don't fold up and down, instead slide in and out on grooved tracks. The springs I'm talking about are a coiled band of metal about 7 inches long when extended.

Russ

I see - you have a MY2002+ with a different design. For MY1998-2001, the rear seat cupholders are in the same place, but instead of springing out, they folded out on a small door below the window switches and ashtray.

RE: Rear twin Cup Holder problem

Yeah that is the problem, the frame which the mechanism slides along is mounted under the air vents and its nearly impossible to clip on the metal spring bands.

I managed to fit it without the spring bands, however you need to use a screw driver to tease the holder out far enough to get a grip and put it out the rest of the way, The spring bands are vital to propel the holder outwards far enough to pull it out by hand.

I'll have another look this weekend and see, there must be a couple of clips holding the frame in place, once that can be popped out it will be easy to assemble the components.

Just wish I could see an exploded drawing of the centre console section in the updated 2002+ models.

RE: Rear twin Cup Holder problem

THANKS Redeye!!!, that was exactly what I was after. Just one last question, does your manual show the proper alignment/instellation of the springs on the cup holder.

At least if they don't I have enough to have a good look around and hopefully work it out.

Thanks once again

Regards
Russ

RE: Rear twin Cup Holder problem

Russ, unfortunately it doesn't. It's the instructions from the Mercedes WIS, so usually a little basic.
