Strange Problem

I have 2005 ML 350 Special Edition. A few days back I had a strange problem when I came to stop by braking at a red light. My vehicle was in Drive and I had pressed the brake. The vehicle had stopped however it was moving front and back at the same spot as if the vehicle had not geared down and it was inbetween two gears. I took my foot off the brake and let the vehicle move ahead a little bit and then pressed the brake again and this time the vehicle came to a steady stop. This has happened once before. Any idea what the problem is or if atall this is a problem?

I got an '05 ML500 loaner and was amazed at how herky jerky the trans was...but with the weight of the vehicle and the newer stronger brakes it wasn't a huge struggle to keep it in place when rolling to a stop. There is supposedly a software flash that can be applied that may correct the situation. There is a huge thread goin' on in the w164 section of this site of owners complaining about a similar issue of the trans downshifting several gears and a lunging motion because of it. I have not had this issue with my '99 but have heard of it happening in late model MLs.
