I'm sorry to be so inquisitive, but this is important for me. By "American MLs" you mean those made out of Tuscaloosa, Alabama, or any ML equipped by MB for the US market?
What do you mean by "how long did it take to POST your mod?" ????? .
I'm assuming you might have meant "HOW LONG DID YOUR MOD TAKE?" ..... All of 10min for the actual AUX connection to the "comand". Remember I did this to a COMAND and not a MCS Nav unit.
PS: I need more research into that mod.... That's why I bought a complete internal wiring harness (to pull apart! and analyse .... along with wiring diagrams) for a ML400CDI MY2004 vehicle..... paid 25 Euros for it (incl both fuse boxes --- passenger footwell & engine bay) ... The whole thing is taped together .... so I'm going to seperate each piece into it's repective logical section and checkout the plug placements.
I want to eventually document plug & Wiring for each feature!.... Now that's a big task eh?.
The point is that normally there should be different harnesses placed into the vehicle , but it was decided that the US manufacturing personnel was too dumb (believe me they tried) to get that done without problems .... so as new models and their features were developed , they only made few sets of complete harnesses..... this meant that new interior features where not possible to be retrofitted easily without replacing the entire (650 Euros +) internal harness...... and extra hardware! ..... not to speak of the mamoth (near impossible) effort to replace it!
A good example of this is the A/C facelift update !... Essentially the basic motors, boxes , etc... stayed exactly the same. Instead of mechanical lever's, cables , etc...they replaced these with electronic motor components screwed on in the same postitions. .... now if you decide to put those little motors in place , you still need all the wiring/plugs/relays/fuses , etc......
.... another example id the PDC ....
... another is the window switches / center console.....
.... On newer models the plugs (connectors) for the electric seats, doors, etc... have changed .... (I know someone who put MY2004 doors & seats into a MY98 ML!!!).
Currently I'm trying to figure out where in the C Column moulding original OEM rear speakers should be placed (Never seen c-column speakers on a W163).
I bought a pair recently , but am still trying to find the orginal moulding!. ... I figure the seller was confused and they are really tweeter speakers fitted to the sail panel in the door.
That is a big task. Good luck finding their secrets, still can't wait for your next documented mod. Maybe I will do my Dynomat first, then use some aftermarket parktronic. Btw, in one of your ebay watch, you had a drawer storage link from ebay for front passenger seat, if you ever find another, can you post that again or PM me if it is not too bothering. Wanted to add that feature to my ML in order to lock something out of sight.
Thanks for your time and explanations. My W163 was made in Tuscaloosa in 06/01 and exported to Mexico, so I don't know if its Alpine or not. The CD player is fiberoptics. I made a pic of the label at the back of the unit and will try to send it to you just now.
I am trying to fit the system with an auxiliary input to fit a carputer in the car. I tried the blaupunkt connector in substitution of the CD changer harness, without success.
I guess I will try the Dension solution, but I am pretty sure that there are cheaper options that do not use the fiberoptics.
Thanks again for your input and receive my best regards and admiration.
