Sound
Well today, after returning from the beach and seeing 110F temps after getting home we then had to go get something and when the car returned, 2002 ML500, my sister and dad went, there was a high pitched constant sound that was coming from the engine or drivers side compartment. We restarted the car and the sound came back. Anyone know what it is or what it could mean?

RE: Sound
I think what you might have is a problem with the ebox fan. Do a search on ebox there is a ton of information on that sound and also how to fix it.

Did the whine go away? IIRC, it's just the injectors and it's normal. I've heard the same pitch on my ML and other MB vehicles I've driven with the same engine design.

Well I started up the ML500 in the garage, with the door up, and the sound was there, but it was really diminished and went away almost completely.

You will also hear it during cold starts in cold weather. It's extremely prevalent on my sister's C320 4matic during the winter.
