I have a 1999 ML320 and I'm hearing a steady high pitch noise when its running seems it's most noticable by the driver rear wheel coming from underneath the vehicle. Anybody know what this might be and how long I have before something breaks down completly?
Does it change in pitch with speed changes? Is it occurring at all speeds or just higher speeds? Does turining one way or the other have an affect on the noise?
Also is ther any grinding type noise associated with it?
no change in pitch with speed changes, higher speeds etc.

The next time you hear it, stop the truck, lift the hood and see if the sound seems to come from the back of the fuse box. If so, the culprit is the ebox fan.

Misread your first post as the front rather than the rear. The fuel pump can make noise but I doubt you can hear it under road conditions. I could only hear the noise from my MY99 when it was stopped.
I listened very closly when I drove away from a stop with the windows down radio off etc and heard the noise but under normal driving conditions I cant hear it except like you said when the truck is stopped. Did you end up replacing yours and what was the cost? Is it urgent to get this repaired?

Actually, I heard the noise only after replacing the fuel filter. At the time, I was able to get an old style filter which was a bit less in cost than the newer ones. I don't think the newer ones make any noise. I cannot comment on damage with delay but it seems to me that so many folks have heard this noise that you would of heard of the problems if they delayed in a repair, assuming that is what is called for.
thanks for the replys I did have my 1999 upgraded to the new fuel filter at around 70,000 (I now have 80,000). It is running fine and the noise does come and go now. I guess when I get a chance to get it in for service I will have them check it out but I'm not going to freak out since it seems other owners have had the same problem.
