HOT START???????

99 ML 320 HOT starting is tough all of a sudden,,, outside temps in the 90's Truck starts, then idle drops to 0, then restart same issue, ONLY WHEN HOT. any ideas?? Runs FINE when under way even when stopped at a light etc, idle is perfect? I am stumped on this one. thanks. 168,000 miles on the ODO and still ticking. John[?]

RE: HOT START???????

not sure if this is the diagnosis to ur perturbing issue, but it could be the fuel pump. my ML ran fine when it was in its home state, yet when i drove it to Texas a few weeks ago, all hell broke loose. it was 105-110 degrees everyday there, and when i was there, i would have rough idles, weird noises and vibrations coming from the engine, and one day, my 320 wouldnt start. had it towed, and the culprit was the freakin fuel pump. drove back home, been good ever since. no more vibrations, or random whines and squeels from the engine. [:D] jus' a thought.... hope i could be of some assistance to finding a solution to your dilemma.

RE: HOT START???????

We sure got a heatblast up in the northwoods. The perfect time for a bug like this to act up.

Does the starter turn over hard or is does the engine just die right after starting?

It could be a fuel delivery problem like vapor lock, but that would be very rare on these. So just to check, how long has it been since fuel filter service?

Also it could be a key and AAM malfunction because the symptoms sound like the control unit is shutting down the engine like the key code has a mismatch.

RE: HOT START???????

I had a Chevy Celebrity that used to do this years ago - it was a bad fuel pump.

Sounds like a faulty CPS (Crank Position Sensor) [;)]

Exact same problem on my BMW.
It was crankshaft position sensor (CPS).
Small part. gets damaged when wet...
