whenever my 00 ML320 is parked in the garage, turned off, there is a burning smell that comes from the engine area. i thought that maybe it was hot outside those days, so i thought it was normal, the engine was working hard. then, on normal, not so hot days, the smell is still evident. i know cars smell like heat after they are parked after driving, but this particular smell is like something is burning, or has been burned. dont notice ne thing when driving the car, runs smmoth and normal. what could that burning smell be?
You could have some sort of fluid leak thats dripping on the engine or manifold. Check fluid levels: power steering, brake fluid, antifreeze, oil, etc.
Does it smell like RUBBER burning? A week after I got mine, it smelled of hot rubber after shutting off engine. I thought it was the belt so I checked and it was fine. The very next week, HARMONIC BALANCER flies apart! Just a guess but check it.
Also, if it is a hot plastic smell, it could be coming from your brake pads! Have you had them replaced recently? I bought a set of RAYBESTOS Platinum pads and the first few days, they smelled like burning plastic. The smell went away in a week and has been gone ever since.
Check out the small coolant overflow hose. Mine got loose from the clip located close to the battery and was hanging down and hitting the exhaust and got burned badly. Smelled like burned rubber all the time when I parked the car but during driving the smell got blown backwards.
