Bought 98 ML320 in 2001. Have had 4 keys die, one per year. Engine turns once, won't start. Dealer says "It happens. Get a new key. $120." After most recent dead key, dealer tells me (for the first time) there's an 8-key limit per vehicle, and I've already hit it. No more keys. Must replace AAM, some other module plus all locks: $%3600. Vehicle obviously not meant to perform this way; dealer will not take responsibility for missing signals of a problem, or for not informing me of 8-key limit. Outrageous, in my humble opinion. Anyone w/similar problems and/or solutions? Thanks, Steve
This may be a stupid question, but did you try replacing the batteries in those past dead keys ??
I've never heard of a key just stop working ... if you have tried this then keep talking to the dealer abou it. Remember the saying "the squeeky wheel gets the oil" Good luck !!

Hi Steve,
I had exactly the same problem on my '00 ML430. I went thru' about 4 keys and multiple trips to the dealer before they figured out it was the AAM at fault.
Since it was switched out under warranty about 3 years back I have had no further key failures.
Previously every 6 months or so a key would apparently give out on me.
I suspect you've had a defective AAM from day one and thus would push for replacement on MB's ticket.
Don't understand why they would need to change the locks though as the metal key itself could be cut to fit.
Why should you have to pay for their incompetence / poor quality ?
Good luck !

Thanks for your reply - if I recall, original owner's warranty was finished by the time I bought the truck, though the superfriendly service advisor -- since departed to sell real estate -- often got work done as if I were covered. Thanks again - Steve
Thanks for yr reply - I sure did check the batteries - there was one key that turned out to need a new one... but it later failed anyway. I will indeed keep squeeking at the dealership - can't accept this silliness. Steve
This was covered before BUT I was reading where the dealer (in this situation) was able to have the keys from the factory coded with an existing (in the computer) key code. I don't know if this would work in your case if the AAM is the culprit but it's worth putting it forward as a short term option. Obviously, if it's the AAM that's broken then you'll have this problem again next year.
Tim, thanks a million for your reply. Good to hear a similar story with a proper resolution. "...they figured out it was the AAM at fault..." is exactly what I maintain should have happened in my case. And replacing it is also exactly what should happen next. As far as keys go, there was a long exchange between my dealer and MB North America...total confusion, yet to be resolved.
Really appreciate your taking the time to help out. Thanks again.
Steve
