Ml430 1999 Front Crankshaft Pulley

If i ever had to fly in a plane with an engine built by MB i would think twice or insure myself before the flight.

63,000 miles, well taken care of, 1999 ML 430 and the main front crankshaft pulley slides / tilts into the engine block throwing the timing off, metal particles cut into the belt, the idler pulley scarred and the loudest metal on metal noise your ears could stand.

Looks like MB wanted to grow lemons and used the right seeds for the ML-430.

Anyone have a picture of the front crankshaft pulley? Front Engine(front and back) side.

Thanks,

Mouse

Not sure what would cause this. I have 83,000 miles--16,000 with a Kleemann Kompressor. Runs like it came off the assembly line yesterday.

In my 19 years of driving several cars I have learned one thing...Maintain your vehicle. Not sure that you are the original owner. If you are and have done all the right stuff and taken care of your baby then you may have indeed been unblessed by A)A lemon B)a service department that effed your car up C)sabatoge by someone else. Your experience is unusual and while sad, there is always an explanation...

Edit: factory installed Harmonic Balancer replaced at 80K miles. Was fine but SA took care of me and fixed it anyway.

RE: Major bummer dude

It does sound like the harmonic balancer, but without seeing it I am shooting in the dark.

It is a HELLACIOUS racket! I thought I blew my engine! Darndest rattling and knocking you ever heard. Age hurts the balancer about as bad as miles.

If it's what it is, it's recalled and dealer will fix. They will not fix the other damage, though.[:(]

Thanks for all the input. Recall? Why was this not taken care of when in the shop months ago? Is this how MB works? Just like my own health, got to take care of it myself.

How do i post a pic?

RE: Ml430 1999 Front Crankshaft Pulley

When your vehicle is in for service, they are supposed to check and see if you have the notorious part # Harmonic Balancer and inspect it. They obviously didn't do this.

Mine was in service last week in Huntsville and they checked it. Of course I replaced mine a year ago so they are going to reemburse me (they say!)

According to my invoice, it is:
RECALL 2005020003 HARMONIC BALANCER

We were all supposed to receive letters but they have been evasive!

Sorry about your damage. It is going to cost you a thick wod to fix it now![:(]

Mouse, this is the harmonic balancer problem.
it affects all M112 and M113 engines used in everything from C class all the way to S class.

Call your service advisor and explain calmly and let him know you know about the harmonic balancer campaign (it's not a recall officially) and MBUSA will pick up entire tab for all repairs.
