guess our garage is just too small for a ML350[:(] The passenger side view mirror went broken when backing out of the garage. Do you guys think it is possible to buy a side view mirror and install it myself? If yes, where to buy? Thanks a lot.
BTW, a follow-up of my last post. I called my dealer and they were very happy to schedule a 1-Year maintenance for me even though my ML350 only has 6000 miles on it.
In my experience...
I let the wife break the mirror several times, for 2.5 years, before I replaced it. I kept using glues until there was nothing else to glue.
Eventually, I had to replace the 'shell' of the mirror. Assuming the glass mirror is ok, only the shell needs to be replaced. I think I paid $152 at the dealership. You may be able to get them to install it, for free, depending on your relationship. However, it is not difficult to install. The glass basically pops on/off of a hub. The heating wire, and motor and glass get reused. You may need a small 'star shaped' bit to complete the job.
If it broke backing out of the garage, then the assumption must be that the mirror base is broken (it would have been bent forward) as well as the glass?
The mirror itself is very easy to install - just pull of the little triangular cover on the inside of the door (pull from the top) and two nuts + 1 bolt later the mirror is loose.
Depending on what broke, you can buy new parts. If it's only the cover (the part with the indicator) that is cheapest. Glass (if it's heated) is a little more; the mirror base assembly itself is the pricey part.... If your glass or cover is still good, re-use those.
The mirror cover slides off the mirror to the outside after depressing a spring clip (that sits towards the outside of the mirror; move the glass in as far as it will go and you will see the clip - use a screwdriver to depress). The glass is held to the mirror base with a number of (fragile) plastic clips plus a metal retaining spring. You have to be careful detaching this from the base as it comes off only 1 way (twist and lift) and if you mess it up there is no return. Remove the mirror cover before attempting this.
If you have folding mirrors, do yourself a favor and fold them in pulling into the garage...works for my wife[8D]
