2000 ML430 Fuel Filter Upgrade

I am in the process of installing the updated fuel filter in 2000 ML430. I am to the point where I have removed the end cap beneath the rear seat and I can see the fuel lines. I had to remove the 60% bench to get at this since the carpet is rather stiff. The WIS system does not state to remove the seat but I do not see how it can be done otherwise.

I plan on removing the fuel lines from the filter before removing from the pump. Besides opening the gas gap, is there anything else I need to do to avoid getting doused with fuel?

Part of the procedure involves starting the vehicle before sealing the end cap to check for leaks. I am concerned about starting vehicle without the rear bench installed; there is a connector for the seat belts (I think) that is obviously disconnected at the moment. There is a warning in WIS to remove the connector with the ignition in “0 to avoid an SRS error. However, nothing else is stated like starting vehicle with it not connected. Does anyone have feedback on this?

Also, I was considering testing the fuel pressure before and after the filter change but I really do not know how or have a gauge at the moment. Can someone give specifics about this procedure? Do you think this is worth it?

Thanks.

RE: 2000 ML430 Fuel Filter Upgrade

To avoid getting doused with fuel, relieve pressure in the system by pulling the fuel pump fuse and start the car...this will get rid of any fuel pressure in the lines and filter.

Let us know how it goes including how much time it took you...I need to do this on my 01' 320 since the dealer wants too much money to do it and the extended warranty company won't cover it.

Good luck!
