My family has a 2002 ML500, purchased in November of last year. When we first bought the car there was an annyoing rattle, like something dangling and hitting something else, coming from the rear of the car, it gets really annoying because we drive on beat up mountain roads. The sound eventually went away, but a few weeks ago after cleaning the car the sound came back. Does anyone else have this problem or know the fix?
If it's the rattling I think you're talking about, it is your rear seats, or at least it was in mine. When I put the seats in the down position, rattling goes away. When I put them back upright, it comes back. I could move mine up and down enough to make the same noise I was hearing.
it could be the 2 removable cargo plates in the tailgate area. also, when the rear seats are unattended, simply fasten all three seat belts. the seat belts hit the c pillar plastic covers, causing rattling. the main reason the m-class has so many rattling issues is since its suspension is extremely stiff. so whenever you go over even the most miniscule bumps, the suspension cant abosorb it. so the already cheapo plastic in the car begins to shake and rattle like theres no tommorow![:D]
Could be the 2 plastic adjusment screws for the tailgate,I put 2 felt pads over the top and stopped my rattling noise. Try this and see how it goes [:D]

Sorry it took a while for me to respond, I've been busy.
Well since most of the time my dad, my mom, my sister and me are riding the rear seat belts are not rattling nor are the seats insecure. I tried putting felt pads on the tailgate adjusters and it is working quite well. Thanks for the tip. Here are two pics so you guys can see what I did:
You might also try adjusting the latch on the liftgate. I found that I could quiet the rattling noise by adjusting the stops, but that the seals had become somewhat flattened and I was getting a lot of road noise. I was able to move the body-mounted half of the latch forward (i.e. deeper) about half an inch. When I first loosened it, it only moved about a sixteenth, but after examining how it is made, I found I could use a hammer and a block of wood to force it further forward, completely against the trim.
